I'm going to ride a hot-shooting Notre Dame squad that is eighth-ranked in the country, has won 10 of its last 11 and still has a chance to tie Pittsburgh for the Big East championship with a victory here and a loss by the Panthers to 19th-ranked Villanova today.
The Huskies have dropped three of their last four. They last played on Wednesday losing to West Virginia, 65-56. Notre Dame is the more rested team, having last played six days ago. The extra rest is huge this late in the season when it comes to Big East battles.
Connecticut is too reliant on Kemba Walker for its scoring. The Irish have two outstanding scorers in Ben Hansbrough and Tim Abromaitis. Those two combined for 40 points when the Irish defeated the Huskies, 73-70, at home on Jan. 4.
Notre Dame was without its third leading scorer, Carleton Scott, in that victory. The Irish also have gotten better since then.
Walker scored 19 points, but missed 15 of 23 shots from the floor. He was zero-for-five from 3-point range. Walker is getting little scoring help. Alex Oriakhi, the Huskies' second-leading scorer, is inconsistent. He's scored a combined seven points in his last two games. Forward Roscoe Smith had missed 27 of 34 shots in his last four games and center Charles Okwandu hasn't been to the free throw line in his last six games.
Notre Dame is the best shooting 3-point team in the Big East canning 39.1 percent of its treys. Connecticut, by contrast, is shooting only 37.3 percent from the floor in its last four games.
