This game will not sniff 139 points. Not even close. They played once before and the final was 58-56. Tonight we will see about the same number of points scored. that. This game just will not be higher than 125 points total and I am very confident in saying
Floridas defense is excellent giving up only 63 points per game. The only 3 teams all year long who have really scored anything on Florida were Syracuse who got 85, Vanderbilt who got 95, and Kentucky who got 89. These 3 teams score on everyone as they are all in the top 6 in NCAA team scoring average.
Not counting those 3 games, Florida is actually giving up less than 59 points per game this year. Florida also does not score much either. In their last 5 games, they have only scored more than 69 points 1 time and have averaged 65 points during the last 5.
This game tonight will be very different than those 3 games as Florida was not able to control the tempo. In each case they were playing a team that likes to run and gun, and a team that was better than them.
South Carolina however, plays a similar style of offense as does Florida. They only give up an average of 69 points per game, but that is misleading because they play even better defense than that seems. The Gamecocks held Kentucky to 62 points which is nearly 20 points below the Wildcats scoring average.
Neither one of these teams wants to run up and down the court. They will both play it slow and limit the number of shots. I dont see a lot of fast break points and I dont see a lot of 3 point shots or shots taken with the shot closk over 15 seconds. This game just has Under written all over it.
The only real scoring threat that either team has is South Carolinas Devan Downey ( the SEC Leading scorer ). He averages 23 points per game, but after that neither team has anyone averaging over 14 points per game. Downey may not even play as he had a rolled ankle just two days ago. He likely will play but its doubtful that he will be even close to 100% with just two days to heal from the injury.
So really we have 1 scoring threat in this game, and I think Florida will shut him down pretty easily since he is injured and they dont really have to worry about anyone else. The rest of the team is going to really have to pick it up but they have been very bad on the offensive end as Downey represents almost 35% of the Gamecocks offense.
I just think this is a great spot as we have two teams that are both happy to play it slow and take their time on offense. We have only one real scorer in this game and he is injured. We have a second meeting between these two teams and the first one fell 25 points short of this total.
