GAME NOTES: The Saint Mary's Gaels will try to stretch their winning streak to seven games tonight, as they host the Pacific Tigers in non-conference play at McKeon Pavilion.
The Gaels are coming off another offensive outburst, as they tallied a 101-80 victory over Portland State on Tuesday. It marked the third time this season SMC has cracked the century barrier, as it won its sixth straight game. The Gaels are now off to a terrific 8-1 start and that includes a 5-1 ledger at home.
As for the Tigers, they too have enjoyed a fast start to the season, posting seven wins against just two losses. The team was recently in action this past Saturday, when it trounced Sacramento State by a 79-49 score. It was a nice bounce back for Pacific, which was coming of its worst loss of the season to California (79-54).
In a series that dates back to 1911, SMC holds a 61-41 advantage over Pacific and that includes a 74-65 triumph in last season's meeting.
The Tigers forced 21 turnovers on the strength of 13 steals and held Sacramento State to a dismal 30.2 percent shooting effort from the floor in a rout over the weekend. Offensively, Pacific also had its way, hitting on 45.0 percent of his attempts from the field and 9-of-21 from three-point range. Demetrece Young made 4-of-6 long distance buckets on his way to 12 points, while Sam Willard and Michael Nunnally each chipped in with 10 points. Willard currently leads the squad in scoring with 10.4 ppg and he is also pulling down a team-high 6.9 rpg. Terrell Smith is hot on his tail with 10.3 ppg and he is also dishing out 2.4 apg.
SMC shot an unconscious 61.8 percent from the floor, including 8-of-19 from downtown, as it breezed past Portland State on Tuesday. The Gaels scored 58 of their points in the paint, where they also dominated the boards, 39-22. Omar Samhan went off for 31 points in the win and he also grabbed 17 caroms to complete his sixth double-double of the season. It was the 29th career double- double for Samhan, who is off to a terrific start, averaging 21.1 ppg and 12.4 rpg. Matthew Dellavedova is second on the rosters in scoring at 14.2 ppg and Mickey McConnell adds 11.4 ppg for a SMC club that is generating 85.6 ppg as a team.
Pacific is off to a good start, but the Gaels are doing even better and with Samhan leading the way, SMC should come out on top tonight.
