Chronicle - Joseph Henry -
I’m honestly ashamed to say I’m a duke student. I’m lost grad, and I was stunned to hear this
Hurtful and wildly inappropriate chant. I was @ the game, I heard the chant. Amazing what will be spun as being “appropriate” after they royally screw up. I was at the game, section 19, row 3, and the crowd was not only chanting, but also spreading the word, to chant ‘how’s your grandmother’. Not 1, 2 ,3, but 4 separate people specifically told me his grandmother died as the reason for the chant.
Classless students who are “mightier than thou” have ruined any good the CC wee did.
NewsObserver - Some Duke fans taunted N.C. State freshman Tyler Lewis about his late grandmother in Thursday’s game, Lewis’ father said Friday. Lewis went to the foul line at 13:47 in the second half of Thursday’s loss at Duke. Most fans in the Duke student section chanted, “Past your bed time,” a playful jab at Lewis’ youthful appearance. Other Duke fans, according to Rick Lewis, chanted “How’s your grandma?” Margie Lewis, Rick’s mom and Tyler’s grandmother, passed away on Feb. 1. Rick Lewis was at Thursday’s game, sitting behind N.C. State’s bench.
“It was mostly ‘Past your bedtime,’ but there was an instant when a brief number of students chanted about Tyler’s grandmother,” Rick Lewis said Friday. “It wasn’t the entire student section, I think a few tried to outdo themselves.” Lewis’ dad said he would rather the focus be on his son’s play the past two games, with N.C. State missing injured point guard Lorenzo Brown, rather than the misbehavior of a few fans.
Cameron Crazies doing it big! The most respectful, passionate, high class fans in all of college hoops continuing to represent themselves better than anyone else. Just shitting on recently deceased grandparents, all in good sport. And I’ll be honest I thought they were just chanting “past your bedtime” when I watched the game. Then I saw every reporter at the game, every NC State player, and Duke students and alumni in the stands all saying they were spreading a grandma chant so I guess that’s what happened. I’m sure the comment section will turn into a nice little friendly debate between the Dukies and everyone else.
Anyway can we check in with Michelle Picon and see what she has to say? Let’s just pull up some of her comments from her article about how much better Duke fans are than anybody else:
Needless to say, such spiteful actions would never be used against any graduate students at Duke (or any other self-respecting university), regardless of their previous educational or athletic allegiance.
Unfortunately, the immaturity and spite exhibited by the administration and the mascot was only amplified among the student body. About 1,300 students were in attendance, and I’m sure 1,200 of them had never watched a Miami basketball game in their entire undergraduate careers. Uninspired expletives, homophobic slurs and limp references to genitalia were the only “cheers” I heard from Miami students the entire game. They did not cease during the national anthem, nor during a moment of silence for a deceased member of their own coaching staff. Pause for a second and imagine that scene in Cameron.
That’s OK—we couldn’t either.
But what followed was even harder to imagine: During the game, the majority of the students standing near us would physically turn their backs on their own team in order to comment on the size of our penises. Meanwhile, Miami played the game of their lives unobserved. I leave it up to you to infer what these students are really passionate about.
Hint: It’s not basketball.
I walked away from that game ashamed and embarrassed to be even remotely associated with the Miami undergraduates. Although Duke played the worst game I have ever seen, I am still proud to call myself a Blue Devil. This experience only served to deepen my appreciation and respect for Cameron Crazies, an exemplary group of boisterous, witty and dedicated supporters—the sixth man, a true fan indeed.
Just so we’re clear. Heckling fans who show up in your student section wearing Duke jerseys for a huge game = shameful and embarrassing. Making fun of a kid’s dead grandmother while he shoots free throws = boisterous, witty, and dedicated. A true sixth man indeed.Comment -
