You can't blame coaches for being overrated when Legends fall into their hands.
Someone like Red Auerbach was a great coach but he also had tons of HOFers to carry him so he gets 10 rings.
Same thing with Bill Belichick (legendary offensive line/great defense/lucky 6th round pick of Brady). Of course Bill is a great defensive coach but nothing special as a head coach imo...ends up being the most dominant NFL coach of the decade. How about Joe Torre coaching the freakin Yankees? Anybody with a pulse can coach the Yankees to a pennant. Coach Krshaueflasdfski from Duke. Overrated? Who knows...all I'm saying is that he has an endless pipeline of 5-star talent coming at him.
So is Phil Jackson overrated for being handed 2 of the 5 best players of all time? Probably, but if he keeps winning, who cares! There's no way he gets fired. Not after all the work he's done to help put Los Angeles on the map.
Phil will be done after this season, no matter what. There's an article in the LA Times nearly every week reiterating this (oops! gave away my bias!
) I shutter to think who will succeed Phil. Definitely NOT Brian Shaw. Probably some guy like PJ Carlesimo. Hopefully Ron Artest doesn't choke him out ala Latrell Sprewell!
