Phoenix Suns look for defensive carryover against Sacramento Kings

Thursday's Suns practice was spirited, intense, demanding, defensive and long.
Saturday's practice was much the same, minus the extra hour of work.
"It was funny, because everybody was like, 'Hey, let's go out here and defend (Friday vs. Detroit) so we don't have to see that type of practice again,' " guard Vince Carter said.
The Suns' new schemes and defensive emphasis looked brilliant for a night Friday when the Suns won 92-75 with the season's lowest opponent shooting (40.8 percent) and scoring. The tricky part is making it last.

The Suns have not held successive opponents to less than 45 percent shooting this season but have a good candidate Sunday in Sacramento, the NBA's third-worst-shooting team entering Saturday.

The Suns succeeded Friday by pressuring ball-handlers off high screens with a big man, even though there is one big man on the court often with the smaller lineups.

"We have to be proactive," coach Alvin Gentry said. "That's where your rotations have to continue to get better. I still think that if you make them shoot perimeter shots, that's three-fourths of the battle if you keep them out of the paint area."

Gentry will stay with a starting lineup of Carter, Steve Nash, Mickael Pietrus, Grant Hill and Robin Lopez, although new backup Marcin Gortat has averaging 30.7 minutes at center in the past three games, compared with Lopez's 12.0.

Bigger teams - such as the Los Angeles Lakers, who visit Wednesday - might demand a bigger lineup. Otherwise, Hill would be asked to guard Pau Gasol.

"That might be a little over the top," Gentry said.

Return of the Dragon

After Nash committed four turnovers in the first eight minutes of Friday's game, Goran Dragic came on and the Suns outscored the Pistons 37-21 with him at point the rest of the half.

Gentry had made a starting-lineup change in part to give Dragic more time with Channing Frye, whose shooting ability can open lanes for Dragic.

"Yeah, definitely," Dragic said when asked if he noticed the impact of Frye. "I was driving inside. In the second quarter, everybody was in the paint so I was finding open shooters and we made the separation. If they're not going to be inside the paint, I'm going to have layups. You just have to read it, and hopefully the shooters will be hot."

Dragic said his legs had not been strong, making him feel slower.

"I was battling with my head, and I just couldn't find the right rhythm," Dragic said.

Dragic's stat line of eight points and five assists in 29 minutes was not dazzling, but he directed the team better and made two 3-pointers in a game for the first time in a month. It helped that it was the first game his parents, who live in Slovenia, attended this season.

Pietrus' swagger

Pietrus is not a shy one. With 147 career starts, starting won't change his aggression, either.

He took seven shots in the first 5:23 Friday.

"He brought the ultraviolet green light with him," Gentry said. "I don't think you have to tell him to not pass up any shots. He seems to be pretty confident with that. They've been good shots."
Pietrus and Gortat are the only Suns with NBA Finals experience, from 2009 with Orlando.
"I know what it takes to get there," Pietrus said. "To me, in my mind, I can take the Suns there, too."
