I have a general rule for myself. If the line is more than 6 points I usually don't touch the favorite. I also always stay away from the big one's that fall between a line of -10 and up.

nba and mlb (don't bet nhl so i am not sure) are the money makers, if you are winning more in football you are luckier than good. the key is many games every night churning a profit, that is how it is done long term for net profit whether you bet $10 a game or $1000. good luck!
