Basketball Parlay of the Day Contest - Monday, 2/18/08
Listen up, basketball experts. Starting Friday (Feb 1) we will commence with the February Hoops Parlay Contest with the monthly grand prize a 22” widescreen LCD monitor. The rules are simple:

    1. Check in the NBA BASKETBALL HANDICAPPING FORUM each day for the daily thread to be posted by LT Profits. Lines will be posted by 1:00 p.m. (ET) each day. Plays may be posted before that, but the official posted lines will be used for grading.

    2. Posted spreads and totals are the only eligible plays for grading. Both NBA and NCAA games included.

    3. Two-game parlay picks, laying 10 to win 26. Post entire parlay at same time, no open parlays.

    4. Here’s the catch: Your play must include a write-up, doesn’t have to be long, just a sentence or two about why you’re making your play. Here’s a THREAD from last year’s contest to be used for an example.

    5. Entries that are past-post or do not have analysis for both games will be NO ACTION. Once your two-team parlay has been posted, you CANNOT change either play. Any edited post will count as a LOSS! If you make a mistake (such as leaving out "Over" or "Under" or not clearly stating your selection), need to add analysis or wish to enter corrected lines, do so in a seperate post. This holds true even if the first game on the schedule did not tip off yet. It also holds true for past-posts and entries with no analysis. It does NOT hold true for posts that are not parlay selections, i.e. standings, commentary posts or congratulatory posts.

    6. And here’s the fine print:
    • Must be 18 years of age or older to participate.
    • One entry per household and IP address.
    • Must use lines posted in daily thread by LT Profits
    • Maximum one parlay pick per day, minimum 15 parlay plays needed to be eligible for monthly prize.
    • Tiebreaker - Win % of individual parlay legs. If still tied, combatants will carry on a head-to-head parlay match until winner determined.
    • All decisions made by SBR with regards to this contest are final.
    • SBR employees eligible to participate but are not eligible to win the monthly prize.
    • Residents outside the Continental US may be awarded the cash value prize instead of the monitor.

Rhode Island - should be getting a point or two.
San Diego-Should be getting around seven
      R.I. is undefeated at home.
History says San Diego can keep this one competitive.

TEXAS A&M +4.5: This line is bigger than it should be because of the revenge angle after A&M routed Texas earlier this year. The bottom line though is that I still think A&M is the better team, and that they just got caight looking ehead to this game when they lost to Okie State Saturday. I will take what I feel is the better team getting this many points.

SAN JOSE STATE +4: Utah State may be 18-8, but they are not a good road team, going 3-7 both SU and ATS away while losing by an average of more than 6.0 points. San Joase State have become giant killers at home, with three outright upsets in their last four home games.

                  Utah State -4 (at SJSU)
Utah State will not lose three in a row. San Jose is good at home, and Utah State has had trouble on the road (everything LT says is right). But I just like Utah State in this spot today. I don't think they are going to let the WAC slip out of their hands. They will be motivated in this one, and they are the superior team. I’ll lay the 4.

                  San Diego +7.5 (v. Gonzaga)
San Diego is playing excellent ball. Their terrific first-year coach, Bill Grier, was at Gonzaga as an assistant for 16 years before taking the Toreros job. He played a big part in putting Gonzaga in the national eye. Let’s just say he knows Gonzaga’s system pretty well. I think his team -- and the crowd -- will be up for this.

#514 San Fran -4.5 : both these teams stink, but the Dons have Polakovic back, he looked good the other night in dropping 18 on the Zags.

#530 Fairfield -2.5 : the Stags are gaining steam going 4-1 in L5 ,while the Red Foxes are going backwards going 1-4 L5, the Red Foxes are really missing the guard play of McCroskey, his 12.5 ppg has hurt them.

side note, if these plays miss i'm going to be pissed, i also liked Niagara, Wofford, and Tex/TexAM over

506 Rhode Island +1½ - i like the rams to win outright over xavier

510 Texas -4½ - the aggies have choked in every big game they have been in this year, i expect that to continue

San Jose St +4 over Utah St: San Jose St 5-1 ATS vs Utah St over the last 3 seasons: Utah St 2-7 ATS on road and only 1-5 ATS when playing a team with a losing record

Niagara -13: They won this meeting by 20 @ St. Peter's, I expect them to cover this at home.

Wofford -3.5: Wofford won this meeting by 33 not long ago, I am expecting another victory tonight, and most likely a cover.

                                Syracuse +10 and over 139

Syracuse playing better of late and this is a lot of points and should go over the total easily.

Rider/Loyola MD under 154 - I think this should stay under as it will be competitive

San Diego +7.5 - should be tough to win by a margin on the road like this for Gonzaga, I think SD will hang tough the whole way through

Texas/A&m over 136 1/2 -- The last game they were at 143, this is a big rivalry and should be a shoot out.

A&M +4 1/2 -- They blew UT out last game and should be able to cover this one.

Austin Peay vs Tenn St under 153.5
Neither team has that great of a defense, but I believe they have enough to with a def avg Austin Peay 72.3,and Tenn St 76.1 that they should keep the game under.

St Marys vs Pepperdine under 150
Although Pepperdine has no defense at all with a 80.6 avg,I think St marys has enough for both of them.

#530 Fairfield -2.5 : the Stags are gaining steam going 4-1 in L5 ,while the Red Foxes are going backwards going 1-4 L5, the Red Foxes are really missing the guard play of McCroskey, his 12.5 ppg has hurt them.

side note, if these plays miss i'm going to be pissed, i also liked Niagara, Wofford, and Tex/TexAM over
see, my friends call me cynical and a conspiracy theorist all the time, and days like these just prove my thoughts, or at least to myself. when i look at the opening lines, i mark what i like by first instinct and gut feeling, but then after looking at past matchups, injuries, trends, etc., i narrow my decision down, and lastly i look at the percentages of what the rest of the public is doing, when i see over 80% going the way i like, i lay off, unless i really really like it. today my first instinct was Syracuse(and i'm a UofL fan),Texas, Tex/TexAM over, Wofford, and Niagara.
well i ruled out Tex/TexAM over cause it was well over 90% and Wofford cause it was over 85% when i looked at those. i also ruled out Niagara cause it was close to 80%. UofL wouldn't of covered if not for that burst in the last 1:30 and the dunk at the end, and Texas easily covered i'm still mad at myself for not taking that one, but thats an everyday thing. I ended up playing Fairfield and San Fran, the Stags fell apart in the 2nd , and the Dons are looking good as of now.
