Basketball Parlay of the Day Contest - Thursday, 1/31/08

Listen up, basketball experts. Starting Wednesday (Jan 2) we will commence with a Hoops Parlay Contest with the monthly grand prize a 22” widescreen LCD monitor. The rules are simple:

1. Check in the NBA BASKETBALL HANDICAPPING FORUM each day for the daily thread to be posted by LT Profits. Lines will be posted by 12:30 p.m. (ET) each day. Plays may be posted before that, but the official posted lines will be used for grading.

2. Posted spreads and totals are the only eligible plays for grading. Both NBA and NCAA games included.

3. Two-game parlay picks, laying 10 to win 26. Post entire parlay at same time, no open parlays.

4. Here’s the catch: Your play must include a write-up, doesn’t have to be long, just a sentence or two about why you’re making your play. Here’s a THREAD from last year’s contest to be used for an example.

5. And here’s the fine print:

• Must be 18 years of age or older to participate.
  
• One entry per household and IP address.
  
• Must use lines posted in daily thread by LT Profits
  
• Maximum one parlay pick per day, minimum 15 parlay plays needed to be eligible for monthly prize.
  
• Tiebreaker - Win % of individual parlay legs. If still tied, combatants will carry on a head-to-head parlay match until winner determined.
  
• All decisions made by SBR with regards to this contest are final.
  
• SBR employees eligible to participate but are not eligible to win the monthly prize.

Wisconsin-Milwaukee -2.5
Analysis: Don’t let the mediocre 12-8 record fool you, Wisconsin-Milwaukee has won 9 out of their last 10 ball games. In other words, this team is not getting a whole lot of credit by the bookies right now. Meanwhile, Detroit is 4-15 and really struggling. They have lost their last 13 ball games and have shown no signs of turning it around, especially with sub-40% shooting outing in their last game. Take Wisconsin-Milwaukee to cover the spread.

Boston College +18.5
Analysis: Boston College has won 2 out of their last 3 road games. They are also 12-6 overall and 3-2 in ACC conference play. That’s not that far away from North Carolina’s impressive 4-1 ACC record. Even though North Carolina will be playing this one in the Dean Dome, this is just too large of a spread from them to cover. Take Boston College and the points.

Phoenix -6.5 ---I've put my reasoning into the "I have a pretty good read on this SA team" thread. Basically, sans Parker and Barry, the Spurs have little depth, only one guard that create shots for himself or others (Manu). This could get ugly.

Cavs-Sonics Under 197 ---I see a 92-84 type game here. Seattle can score, but I figure Cleveland will try to slow it down after a tough win last night. I love the under in SA/SEA and Dallas +1 but not quite as much as this.

Without Garnett, Celtics wont be able to slow down the Mavs. Also, with L Powe and G. Davis both playing a lot this game, who are both fouling machines, look for Mavs to capitalize on their Free-throws (being the best FT team in the NBA - 82%).

Phoenix Suns -6½
Suns playing at home, with everyone on their squad playing; against a Spurs team who has been struggling minus Parker and maybe Berry? This one is a no brainer.

Washington +1.5: UW as a home dog is almost an automatic play for me. The Huskies are 64-8 SU at home since '03. I'm not at all sold on Stanford as an elite team in the Pac-10, and I like the possibility of Brockman getting the Lopez's in foul trouble, considerably improving UW's chances in the process. Huskies win outright.


Minnesota -2.5: Very public play, which I hate, but outside of NW and PSU, UM's going to really struggle to get a win within the conference. Tubby's boys play defense, and UM has exactly 2 capable scorers. There's so much pressure on Manny to score for UM, and if he has a sub-40% shooting night (which is likely given the attention he receives from opposing defenses), UM has little to no shot of beating capable teams. It's just really tough to compete when your best player's a freshman who weighs 8 lbs., your second best player (D-Sims) is likely the dumbest player in the country, you have no idea how to run Beilein's offense (and lack the personnel to do so), and play no defense. Other than that, UM's a fine team. Minny wins by DD.
