Basketball Parlay of the Day Contest - Wednesday, 1/30/08

Listen up, basketball experts. Starting Wednesday (Jan 2) we will commence with a Hoops Parlay Contest with the monthly grand prize a 22” widescreen LCD monitor. The rules are simple:

1. Check in the NBA BASKETBALL HANDICAPPING FORUM each day for the daily thread to be posted by LT Profits. Lines will be posted by 12:30 p.m. (ET) each day. Plays may be posted before that, but the official posted lines will be used for grading.

2. Posted spreads and totals are the only eligible plays for grading. Both NBA and NCAA games included.

3. Two-game parlay picks, laying 10 to win 26. Post entire parlay at same time, no open parlays.

4. Here’s the catch: Your play must include a write-up, doesn’t have to be long, just a sentence or two about why you’re making your play. Here’s a THREAD from last year’s contest to be used for an example.

5. And here’s the fine print:

• Must be 18 years of age or older to participate.
  
• One entry per household and IP address.
  
• Must use lines posted in daily thread by LT Profits
  
• Maximum one parlay pick per day, minimum 15 parlay plays needed to be eligible for monthly prize.
  
• Tiebreaker - Win % of individual parlay legs. If still tied, combatants will carry on a head-to-head parlay match until winner determined.
  
• All decisions made by SBR with regards to this contest are final.
  
• SBR employees eligible to participate but are not eligible to win the monthly prize.

I don't like this play at all, wouldn't put a single cent on it. Even though they snapped their losing streak last weekend with a 59-56 yawner up in Stillwater, I still don't trust my boys. But I'm playing them in the contest anyway.

Aggies-Longhorns Under 140½
Despite Texas A&M shooting above 50% in the win over Okie State, they're still a shaky team to count on. After they hit over 61% against Colorado on Jan 12 (Buffs hit over 62% in the game), the Ags went cold and shot under 40% during their three-game losing streak. And except for Josh Carter, they can't even spell free throw much less make one. If the Ags win and cover, then it's going to have to be something along the lines of a 63-58 regulation score.

(By the way, I really expect the Horns to win straight up and to score 75+.)

Nebraska +4.0
Analysis: Missouri’s leading scorer, Hannah, is out of this ball game and there are also 4 players who could miss this game due to suspensions. This spells the word D-O-O-M for any team. On top of all this Nebraska has just one loss less than Missouri in the overall record category and they have shot less than 40% in their last 3 ball games! What does this mean? Bounce back! Take Nebraska and the points.

Air Force +4.5
Analysis: Air Force only has one more loss than BYU in conference. On top of that, Air Force is an impressive 9-1 at home, while BYU is a bad 4-5 on the road. Finally, BYU is coming off of one of their best games of the season in which they shot over 50% from the field. This suggest a let down, especially when you have to play the next game away and in an arena in which the home team has won 9 out of their last 10 games there. Take Air Force and the points.

Seton Hall -1.5...Rutgers two big victories over ranked teams showed they are not the total doormat of the BE. Seton Hall is still too strong of a team right now.
Drake -5...Going to prove toughness at home. Voters feel strong enough about this team to put them in top 25 and I agree. Won earlier @ Creighton by 8.

ST. LOUIS +8: While the Billikens' 20-point game at George Washington got all of the publicity, St. Louis is not THAT bad, sitting at 11-8 on the year. Dayton has hit a wall after being ranked, as they have now lost three straight, all by double-digits. Also, the underdog is 9-2 in the last 11 head-to-head meetings.

KANSAS STATE +7: I actually got +7.5 in real life. Yes, this is a ballsy play vs. perhaps the best team in the country. However, Kansas has had some close calls vs. some the better teams they have faced, and I love the way Kansas State is playing right now. The 14-4 Wildcats have won five in a row and they're 9-1 in their last 10, and this is a young team that has just gotten better with every game and could be scary good come March. This should easily be Kansas's stiffest conference challange to date after crushing their first five Big 12 opponents.

GS/N Orleans under 217.5 - GS often tires on back to backs on the road, and New Orleans can play tough D when they are of a mind to. I think New Orleans is going to hold GS to a low score, and this game will wind up with a moderate final total.

Central Florida -3 - I like this C Fla team, they have some good wins against conference foes and some competitive games against ranked teams under their belt. UAB can be good too but I think C Fla will get a win similar to what they did against UTEP in their last home game.
