Basketball Parlay of the Day Contest - Thursday, 1/17/08

Listen up, basketball experts. Starting Wednesday (Jan 2) we will commence with a Hoops Parlay Contest with the monthly grand prize a 22” widescreen LCD monitor. The rules are simple:

1. Check in the NBA BASKETBALL HANDICAPPING FORUM each day for the daily thread to be posted by LT Profits. Lines will be posted by 11:00 a.m. (ET) each day. Plays may be posted before that, but the official posted lines will be used for grading.

2. Posted spreads and totals are the only eligible plays for grading. Both NBA and NCAA games included.

3. Two-game parlay picks, laying 10 to win 26. Post entire parlay at same time, no open parlays.

4. Here’s the catch: Your play must include a write-up, doesn’t have to be long, just a sentence or two about why you’re making your play. Here’s a THREAD from last year’s contest to be used for an example.

5. And here’s the fine print:

• One entry per household and IP address.
  
• Must use lines posted in daily thread by LT Profits
  
• Maximum one parlay pick per day, minimum 15 parlay plays needed to be eligible for monthly prize.
  
• Tiebreaker - Win % of individual parlay legs. If still tied, combatants will carry on a head-to-head parlay match until winner determined.
  
• All decisions made by SBR with regards to this contest are final.
  
• SBR employees eligible to participate but are not eligible to win the monthly prize.

in past meetings when playing in Denver these teams have more often than not had low scoring games, when they play in Utah they seem to shoot lights out... this total seems too high for this game on Denver's home court

I'm a bit concerned about Vandy's state of mind after their last game against Kentucky which marked their first loss of the year. They came back and damn near beat the Wildcats before losing in OT, and I'd probably fade them tonight against anyone but Tennessee. I'm banking on the Commodore's not having much trouble getting up for this one and putting the Kentucky loss out of their minds. Everyone's talking about both teams' offenses, but I expect this one to stay below their season averages to date certainly. Thinking something like 77-70, Tennessee, and wish these damn totals would go up sooner for this contest because I'd definitely play the Under 165 that just went up.

Austin Peay -10½
Again, too bad the totals aren't up because I'd love to cash the Over 148 that just went up. The two combined for 160 in regulation just a couple of weeks ago at Tenn-Martin, before Austin Peay won it 90-85 in OT (they opened as 4-point chalk in that one, and the spread closed at 5). This is one of those small-school rivalries in the OVC that most don't really know about. After almost losing that game in Martin on Jan 3, I expect the crowd in Clarksville tonight to be riled up on Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night and for the Governors to do their best to smother Skyhawks scoring machine Lester Hudson.

Utah +4 I live here and have follwed the jazz for 20 years. This team is 8 games better then there record shows. Playing alot better once the trade went through to get KK from the 76ers. Utah 7-3 in there last 10 Nugs 6-4. The only thing denver has going for them is a home game. Nuggets looked like shit on the road the last 2 games. This one should be close and could be anyones game. Might also throw down a ML on the Jazz

Spurs -8 Spread seems high. But the spurs are one team that should be able to play D fence againest james and the cavs 3 point threat. The cavs will probably lose by 6

Analysis: Minnesota hasn’t really proven anything all season and they are going up against an Indiana team that can flat out play ball. Throw home court advantage out of the window. Take Indiana to cover the spread.

Analysis: Jacksonville St. may be the worse team, but they have been playing better as of late and Eastern Kentucky is not 10 points more talented than this Gamecock squad. Take Jacksonville State and the points.

Utah has been stepping up their game, winning 4 in a row, playing solid defense and utilizing their strong rebounding. Denver just returned from a tough eastern road trip. They are usually very good home team, but their home advantage should be lower than normal as Utah is better rested, have quite short trip and also play their home games in thin air. I think Utah shouldn't be the dog in this one. My line is Utah -1. Also think total is slightly high and will likely stay under if Utah wins.

Denver -2.5 Favorite is 8 and 3 for the last 11 meetings and denver is 7 and 3 in their last 10 vs NBA Northwest. Denver is also home and I don't mind laying the points.

With no college totals (I have one tonight in RL under 127.5 in the East. Wash game) I'm kinda stuck. LT has a front page play tonight so fade him (sorry LT I gotta catch up so I need a play).

Analysis in my plays thread... Simple fact is that IU has way too much firepower for the Gophers to handle... Line is a few points too low...

Youngstown St +6.5 - too many points to be giving up against a capable team at home. valpo is dangerous and most of their losses have come against elite teams, but i think youngstown st is likely to be able to keep this one close, I think it will go down to the wire.

Hofstra +6.5 - Mason has not played too well on the road of late, winning by a margin here will be tough for them, IMO. Hofstra has been inconsistent but decent enough for me to think they shouldn't be giving up this many points at home here.

Cleveland/SA under 181.5 - Two Half Court Defensive minded teams, hopefully Cleveland's D shows up tonight to keep this under the number.

Utah/Denver under 220.5 - Tough one as these two teams could easily get over this number, but I think more times than not their is enough D played to keep this under the number.

Tonight the Spurs play at home vs the Cleveland Cavs. The spurs are 19-3 at home and the Cavs are 8-12 on the road. Spurs are 21-10-1 ATS in their last 32 home games. I expect Spurs to cover tonight.
