Basketball Parlay of the Day Contest - Saturday, 1/12/08

Listen up, basketball experts. Starting Wednesday (Jan 2) we will commence with a Hoops Parlay Contest with the monthly grand prize a 22” widescreen LCD monitor. The rules are simple:

1. Check in the NBA BASKETBALL HANDICAPPING FORUM each day for the daily thread to be posted by LT Profits. Lines will be posted by 11:00 a.m. (ET) each day. Plays may be posted before that, but the official posted lines will be used for grading.

2. Posted spreads and totals are the only eligible plays for grading. Both NBA and NCAA games included.

3. Two-game parlay picks, laying 10 to win 26. Post entire parlay at same time, no open parlays.

4. Here’s the catch: Your play must include a write-up, doesn’t have to be long, just a sentence or two about why you’re making your play. Here’s a THREAD from last year’s contest to be used for an example.

5. And here’s the fine print:

• One entry per household and IP address.
  
• Must use lines posted in daily thread by LT Profits
  
• Maximum one parlay pick per day, minimum 15 parlay plays needed to be eligible for monthly prize.
  
• Tiebreaker - Win % of individual parlay legs. If still tied, combatants will carry on a head-to-head parlay match until winner determined.
  
• All decisions made by SBR with regards to this contest are final.
  
• SBR employees eligible to participate but are not eligible to win the monthly prize.

I took the "Pct" field out of the top section since it was a meaningless number. This avoids confusion should a tiebreaker be needed, as the tie-break is the winning percentage on a Game-by-Game basis, which is the bottom standings.

Purdue pk: OSU's first legit road test in league play (Illinois = terrible). I'm getting my 4th-ranked Big 11 team (Purdue) as a pk. at home against my 6th-ranked Big 11 school (OSU). Many thanks to the Buckeyes' 8-game winning streak against national powers such as Cleveland State, Presbyterian (who?) and Coppin State, as well as conference dwellers Iowa and Northwestern for spreading the notion this team can actually play. Truth is, this is a poor OSU squad, and wins on the road in league play will be few and far between for schools not named MSU, IU, Wisky. Oh yeah, Purdue is pretty good.

Indiana State +2.5: We know this isn't the same SIU team from a year ago... they greatly miss Tatum's scoring and Young's defensive prowess. Going to be difficult for the Salukis to have success on the road in the Valley this season, where every team's exceedingly tough at home. ISU fits that description, with convincing wins over Creighton and N. Iowa already on their resume.

Texas Tech has had some bright moments this year (like blowing out Gonzaga, and like playing Stanford very close). Oklahoma State hasn't shown me much. They have not won in a lined game since 12/1/07 (v. Washington). I'll take the points.

The Buffs just don't have jack. Here they are on the road playing a team that might well roll to the final 4. Most sane people don't like to lay 20 in NCAA basketball. I will on this one. KANSAS STATE +8: This is an acid test for the Wildcats after beating up on a bunch of cupcakes lately. Still, they probably have the best player on the court in super-freshman Beasley, and they are 7-1 ATS in the last eight meetings with the Sooners.

WASHINGTON WIZARDS +7.5: The Celtics have been off their game of late, while the Wizards have covered 63% of their games this season. They have the perimeter shooters to shoot over the great Boston defense, and look to offer some nice value at this price at home.
