At that point in time, the trade for Gasol wasn't about making the team better. Memphis was changing ownership then and was all about price cutting.

Personally I wouldn't have done that trade because it set them a few years back, but Marc Gasol, and two 1st rounders aint a bag of donuts.. The trade wasn't a total ripoff like everyone thinks it was.

We understand that Memphis was able to cut salaries, by trading Pau Gasol. They added a Center in Marc Gasol, who is a legit Center. and some garbage first round picks.

The problem with the trade, is that is shifted the complexion of the Western conference. It automatically made the Lakers the front runner for for Western conference championships. Other teams were pissed off, that Memphis traded Gasol w/o getting another impact player from the Lakers. Memphis was the only team willing to trade their best player, for Kwame Brown.

Yea it helped Memphis improve their roster in the long term basis. But it made the Lakers a powerhouse, and stacked. The irony is that Memphis traded a player that would make competing in the West much harder than it already was, and they play in the same conference.
