wat a dumbass. From the Boston Globe "O'Neal earned more than $23 million last season but was willing to take the $5.7 million MLE for a chance to win a title.". He is giving up 18 mil for a chance to win the title? What is MLE anyone>?

                          Mid-level exception
Once a year, teams are allowed to sign a player to a contract equal to the average NBA salary, even if the team is over the salary cap already, or if the signing would put them over the cap. This is known as the Mid-level exception (MLE). The MLE may be used on an individual free agent or split among multiple free agents, and is available to any team that exceeds the salary cap at the beginning of the offseason. The Mid-Level Exception for the 2008-09 NBA season was $5.585 million.[2] The MLE is $5.854 million for the 2009-10 NBA regular season.[3]

An example would be the Toronto Raptors' acquisition of Jason Kapono during the 2007 off-season, and the Los Angeles Lakers' signing of Ron Artest in 2009

Was he actually going to get more money elsewhere?

Seems like it could be a decent pick up, guy hasn't done anything lately but maybe he will be motivated playing on a good team.

dont like this move for the celtics. im a boston fan, and i dont think this makes the celts that much better. watching oneal play against boston in the playoffs, i wasn't scared when he had the ball in his hands. this is a temporary band aid for perkin's absence, so all he has to do is play decent, which i'm not sure if he can do. maybe the big 3 can motivate him.

He's been a broad ever since the Artest/Detroit brawl. Injuries have slowed him down a lot. Maybe he's got something left in tank, but I don't see it.

He just needs to be a threat on the offensive end and rebound on the defensive end...
SEE P J Brown from two years ago......

You can't have perkins and rondo on the floor at the same time for any long strecthes because people just DARE them to shoot from the outside.

Boards and defense, that's all he's needed for. Has a nice low post game, but injuries have slowed him down.

I think this is a solid pickup. We need the size, we need boards and some D, that's all. He doesn't have to light it up.
