Wednesday's Front Page NBA Plays (Oct 31)
Back Milwaukee Bucks (+7½) at Orlando Magic

    Game Time: 10/31/2007 07:05 PM -
    By: Matt Fargo | 10starpicks.com

The Bucks were awful last season, with injuries playing a big role. Now healthy and deeper, Milwaukee will bounce back nicely and they are the play in Orlando tonight.

This line is based on last year and last year only. The Milwaukee Bucks finished with the second worst record in the Eastern Conference and third worst record in the entire league, piling up only 28 wins.

It wasn’t as though Milwaukee was a bad team and couldn’t compete but the fact that the team was absolutely decimated with injuries. The starters missed 184 games, including the entire season from Bobby Simmons. Everyone is healthy and new additions will make the Bucks a stronger team.

Taking the place of starters Simmons and Charlie Villanueva are rookie Yi Jianlian and seven-year veteran Desmond Mason, who makes his return to Milwaukee after two years with the Hornets. Simmons and Villanueva will be coming off the bench making the Bucks a very deep team. Most importantly, shooting guard Michael Redd and point guard Mo Williams are healthy. The Bucks will likely be pursuing the seventh or eighth spot in the playoffs along with tonight’s opponent.

The Orlando Magic started strong last season with a 13-4 burst but concluded the season going just 27-38 before being swept in the playoffs by the Detroit Pistons. Orlando acquired Rashard Lewis in the offseason to give the offense some firepower, but does he really make the team better? He and Ray Allen gave the Sonics a lethal 1-2 scoring punch for 4½ seasons, but reached the playoffs just once. Dwight Howard is a future superstar but the backcourt remains a question mark.

There is not much of a difference between these two teams from top to bottom. Orlando will have the luxury of playing in the much easier Southeast Division while Milwaukee has to deal with Detroit, Cleveland and Chicago in the Central, all of whom finished with a better record than the Southeast champions Miami Heat last season. Orlando is picked by many to win the division while Milwaukee is picked to finish last in the Central, but based on strength, it means nothing.

There is too much overlay here as Milwaukee hangs. Play the Milwaukee Bucks for a unit.

    Free Pick: Bucks +7½ (-110)

    Toronto Raptors (-6½) vs. 76ers

    Game Time: 10/31/2007 07:05 PM -
    By: Mike Rose | who2beton.com

Toronto was a solid team a year ago, and a winning proposition at home in the Air Canada Centre. Ride the Raptors to a season-opening win and cover against the Sixers.

The 2007-08 season tips off for both of these Atlantic Division clubs tonight as the Philadelphia 76ers travel north of the border to take on the Toronto Raptors.

The Dino’s young talent erupted last season en route to the franchise's first ever division championship. A bulk of last year’s squad that took three of the four meetings with the Sixers last season returns for Toronto this year.

The Sixers are in complete rebuilding mode heading into the upcoming campaign, but they do have some solid pieces in place to help mold the team’s future outlook. However, with Toronto already having a season under its belt during Bryan Colangelo’s watch and experiencing immediate success, they’ve raised the bar for ’07. They’ll no longer be able to sneak up on anyone, and they certainly can’t relax against lesser clubs if they expect to outdo their ’06 effort.

Philly gave them trouble in their own gym both meetings last year, but the Raptors certainly hold a decided edge in this early matchup considering the Sixers go about six deep right now. Toronto was a solid proposition to back in the Air Canada Centre last season, so we’ll jump right back on the money train for our first position of the season.

Nothing better than getting off on the right foot to start the season; especially against a divisional foe.

    Free Pick: Raptors -6½ (-110)

      Dallas Mavericks -3½ at Cavaliers

      Game Time: 10/31/2007 08:05 PM -
      By: Scott Rickenbach | playbook.com

The Dallas Mavericks have been waiting for tonight ever since their early ousting from last year's playoffs. Play the Mavs as road favorites in Cleveland against the Cavaliers.

The only thing that kept this from being a star-rated play for us on Wednesday is the injury situation.

The Mavs are without their #2 scorer, Josh Howard, and #2 rebounder, Erick Dampier. Although this may test the Mavericks a bit, they are road favorites here with good reason. We expect Dallas to come out with plenty of emotion tonight as they had to wait all summer for this opportunity. It was a long summer for the Mavs because their season ended unexpectedly with a first round playoff exit at the hands of Golden State in last season's playoffs.

As for Cleveland, they still rely too heavily on LeBron James and, even with injuries, the Mavericks are more well-rounded team and extra motivation goes a long way for the Mavs in this one. Play Dallas minus the points as for Wednesday.

      Free Pick: Mavericks -3½ (-110)
