The retirement of basketball player Michael Jordan, after 13 years as a professional athlete, has generated a massive amount of media coverage. One doesn't write an "astounding amount" of coverage only because the US media's response is entirely predictable. Along with scandal-mongering and beating the war drums, cultivating the public's fascination with celebrities is one of their favorite pastimes.Comment -
I watched Jordan play live on many occasions as I was an Atlanta Hawks season ticket holder and traveled a lot to Chicago, Cleveland, Indiana and Detroit back in the day. The one thing that really seperated him from everyone else for me was that he "showed up" each and every night. He never disappointed and had some type of highlight play each night. I've seen other athlete's take off games at times but Jordan played at a high level each night. Lebron is getting there but even Kobe had bad nights. Jordan found ways to beat you every night. If he wasn't having a good shooting night, he would get the hole and the FT line.
The only time the Hawks would sell out was when Jordan came to town. Every venue Jordan went to it sold out and he put on a show. He really was a human highlight...Comment
