If you keep Power Ratings, where do you have the Orlando Magic right now? How about the Phoenix Suns? Do you even trust your ratings any more? Should ANYONE trust their ratings right now?!
Let's say, for the sake of argument, that Boston was ranked at 80 in your Power Ratings. I'm just picking a number. The higher the number the better the team. Playoff teams are near 80...the worst teams in the league are in the low 70's or worse. Boston's an 80.
*In Game One, Orlando played like a 72, losing at home by four points, when home court advantage is also worth about four points. Orlando was eight points worse than Boston, so we call them a 72 for that game.
*In Game Two, same story...except it's a one point difference. Orlando played like a 73 in a three-point home loss to Boston. No bounce back. No 'adjustments' from the coaches or players. Suddenly, Orlando is worse than Milwaukee.
*In Game Three, Orlando gets thumped. They lose by 23 points. But, the game is in Boston, meaning it's more like a 19-point differential once you account for home court advantage. Orlando played like a 61. Worse than New Jersey. For three games, Orlando has registered 72, 73, and 61 in terms of 'level of play.'
*In Game Four, some improvement. Finally! Orlando takes the game in overtime, which is a tie at the end of regulation. That makes them four points better on this night once you account for the game being played in Boston. That grades out as an 84. We have some nice symmetry here. Two games in the low 70's...one way below that, one way above that.
*In Game Five, the old Orlando Magic from a few weeks ago finally showed up. At home, they scored a 21-point victory. That's more like a 17-point victory once you adjust for home floor. That gives them a 'level of play' mark of 97!
What do you rate them NOW?
Have they figured out how to play, and they're going to be a 97 the rest of the way? Was that a one game fluke, and they're going to slump back to the mid 70's? How can you evaluate a team that's performed...from low to high...as 61, 72, 73, 84, and 97 over five games in the span of a week and a half?
Oddsmakers can only guess. Sharps are as frustrated in recent days as I can ever remember seeing them in the NBA playoffs. Usually sharps have a good read on a series once a few games have been played. In the championship rounds, the early games are distant memories.
We had something similar for Phoenix in the first four games of the Lakers series. If we make the Lakers an 80 for the sake of argument (though I think most people would have had them a few points better than Boston in real ratings), Phoenix would have posted a 63, 71, 85, and 85 in order. That's 22 points from top to bottom...with one very poor game but two very good ones.
Game Six is on Saturday. How will you rate Phoenix when they come back home after Thursday's fifth game?
We're certainly looking at an interesting weekend in the baskets, as this very challenging conference championship round continues. You've seen the lines jumping around. You've steam moves from sharps lose handily. You've seen the public jump on a team at just the wrong time. Both the sharps and the squares loved the Lakers in Game Four at Phoenix, and got spanked.
It's tough to call this 'a bettor's market' when so many bettors are losing! But, that's actually the case because quality handicapping has an even bigger edge over softer lines. In games 1 and 2, relatively little D. Both high scoring games and the lakers dominate. Game 3 - Suns implement "girly" zone defense. Suns win games 3 and 4. Game 5 - Lakers implement their own tenacious D and squeek out a win in a relatively low scoring game. Can the suns win game 6?

Few facts for you:

- Orlando have won all five playoff 4th quarters comfortably between these two (by 12, 5, 5, 5, 12).
- Orlando are 6-2-1 SU for the second half in all games between these two, but if using current spread of full game +3.5 and 1st half +2.0 (thus assuming Orlando is +1.5 for the second half) they would be 8-1 ATS for the second half
- Boston are 7-1-1 in the second quarter in the 9 games played this season
- And just in case anyone missed it before, Boston hasn't scored more than 95 points in any game against Orlando this season
