And teams would tank at the end of the season and get the number one pick, thats when you would have prima donna guys coming out of college holding out declaring they wouldnt play for those sucky teams, I wouldnt wanna see a team tank just to get the first pick.

Lottery prevents teams from tanking to insure a number one pick when they have nothing to play for, its a good idea to have it.

This is basketball where one player can change everything unlike other sports. If you guarantee the worst team the number one pick you would have a bunch of teams losing on purpose which would be a joke. Can you imagine what would happen in the years when there is a guaranteed franchise player sitting in the draft (Shaq, Duncan, Lebron, etc.)
