A decent night, as the Spurs and the Jazz / Wolves fail me, but the 3 other highlighted game hit in convincing fashion. 3-2 turns the total into 30-21-3. I'm guessing that Kevin Love's return played a big part in that Jazz / wolves game being off. We'll see when the data comes out.

#37Picks for today.
Denver Nuggets Philadelphia 76ers -6.5 217 55.28% 44.72% 68.72% 30.16% 64.86% 33.76%
Portland Trail Blazers New York Knickerbockers -3 201 43.70% 54.98% 63.74% 35.02% 47.44% 50.78%
Golden State Warriors Oklahoma City Thunder 7.5 222 37.54% 62.46% 51.66% 46.88% 25.54% 72.78%
San Antonio Spurs Utah Jazz 2 194 42.32% 56.30% 79.70% 19.40% 39.70% 59.02%
Nuggets / 76ers - Under
The nuggets don't have the same firepower on the road that they do at home, and Philly hasn't put up a good home offensive outing in awhile.
Blazers / Knicks - Under
The Knicks have actually put up 2 strong home games recently, and Portland's defense has gone in the hole. However, I imagine the Blazers will slow things down to keep this one close and low.
OKC: -7.5
The Thunder are a bit erratic at home, but the Warriors haven't played efficient offense on the road, but they play with their sieve they call a defense. The reason the under isn't such a sure thing is that the pace might get out of a hand and produce some points. It seems like most other systems are projecting a strong under, so we'll see.
Spurs / Jazz - Under
The Spurs haven't played many road games, so the sample is a little dangerous. The ones they have played though have been unimpressive offensively. The Jazz can also be erratic at home, but they've been locking down defensively lately.
As an aside, I feel like there's an Under bias with the current model, as it seems like it never takes the over. I'll look into this in the coming days.

#40Solid night last night, going 3-1 moving the total line up to 33-22-3. The Jazz / Spurs game went pretty far over. The Jazz played their best offensive home game of the year - interestingly enough, their second best was also against spurs earlier in the year - the offense and defensive splits were almost identical, and both pretty far above their home norm. The Spurs also put up their best offensive road game, although there were only 5 road games before it.
Lots of unders again tonight
Magic / Clips - The Magic have been wildly variable on the road. They've put up strong and poor efforts on both ends of the court. What solidifies this under though is the fact that the clips have yet to put up a strong home offensive game. They've been below average in terms of offense and have a low variance to go along with it.
Kings / Hornets - New Orleans has played a solid string of strong defensive games at home. The Kings play above average offense and below average defense, but they haven't varied much. I'm worried a bit about the possessions, since the Hornets have a pretty high variance with that regard at home.
Nuggets / Bobcats - again, the Nuggets aren't as explosive on the road as they are at home. The Bobcats can play average in term of efficiency on offense, but their defense is still on lockdown.
Suns / Mavs - Another under - Both teams are wildly erratic so be careful, but both also have some pretty stainful offensive marks on their record. Phoenix is simply much more powerful at home than on the road.
The last two games are again predicted to go under. The Grizz are getting some respect due to some strong play at home. The Nets get respect because Chicago has played so poorly.
Good luck all.Comment -

#42The model is currently on fire right now - I'm hoping its because we've got enough data on teams now to start making valid predictions, but I'm going to guess it's just a hot streak that will cool down soon.

I'll have to look and see what happened with that Nets / Bulls game. The sample on Chicago at home was small (only 7 games) and not very recent due to their big road trip. It seems like 10 or 12 games on the books is a good threshold for this system.
Last night's 6-2 brings us to 39 - 24 - 3 on the year. I'm also glad that the system picked the winner of every game last night, although a lot of games were close, and the Memphis / Cavs game went into OT.
Picks will be posted later once I run last nights games.Comment -

Got some overs today if you're looking to finally play one. New Jersey was a play at the old line, but it's moved down into the sub 60% range. More analysis coming later hopefully.
About last night:
Nets / Bulls both played one of their better offensive games on the year, and also played at a very fast pace - We're still figuring out what kind of team the Bulls are at home.
Memphis and Cleveland also tilted towards the higher end of their offensive / defensive spectrum. It wasn't as bad as the Nets / Bulls numbers in terms of outliers, but it was certainly above average.Comment -

#46I've been trying to work on the formatting a bit, since copying results over from excel looks sloppy. The first row is the teams, away and home. Second row is the simulated spread and total. Third row is the % each team covers the spread. 4th row is % under / over. 5th row is % win.

Looking at the Denver / Detroit example, the model has Detroit covering the spread 64.58% of the time. It's fairly torn on the over under, with 48.8% of simulations going under and 51.2% going over. Finally, if you like money lines, the model has detroit winning 52.02% of the simulations.
Looks like Detroit -7 is the only play tonight on a tiny schedule.
About last night:
Cleveland put up the worst offensive performance of the year by a long shot. This was one of those fringe results that didn't evene appear in their past profile. Kudos to Houston for shutting them down.
The MIN / NOH total doesn't stick out to me as a huge outlier. I think the possessions estimate shot a little high because both teams had played fast basketball recently.

#47A simple 1-0 last night as the pick hits, moving up to 47-27-4. Don't have all the lines yet I don't think (or last night's data), but here's what I have. I think I highlighted everything over 60%. Only games with teams that played last night are going to change when I updated the data. The Lakers are pretty close to 60%, so you could add them to the pot if so desired.

In the Grizz / OKC game ,OKC put up their best adjusted offensive night, while Memphis put up their worst adjusted defensive night with respect to location for both stats. These things fall in the range of the calculation, but they're well off the average.
I didn't get a chance to post the Dallas / Heat and Atlanta / Toronto picks, but it managed to get the two picks from that game right. Obviously, this won't go into the record ex post facto.

#49Went 1-1 on Saturday for a total of 54-30-5. That one indiana / washington total defied all prior statistics as both teams played their best offensive games by a long shot.

Oklahoma City Thunder Denver Nuggets 10.5 207.5 59.89% 40.11% 49.68% 50.32% 43.83% 54.95%
The system likes 3 games - Memphis +8, GS +3.5, and the Under in the GSW / PHI game. There are a couple other close ones that I'll include as well that are a hair under 60% - NOH +8 and OKC +10.5.
I'm pretty happy with where the simulations are right now. It seems like there's a bit of an under bias - is there any anecdote or opinion on bettors going with overs more frequently? Perhaps Vegas is trying to trap the over bettors - just a thought. Or perhaps my possession estimates need to be tweaked.

The system liked the Bulls / Lakers under - However, 2 caveats. 1) The Lakers still don't have much of a road resume, and 2) These 75% total plays have not had much success lately. I'll probably still bet it anyway though. The system only projects about 78 points for the Bulls - ouch!
Another one that it likes is the Toronto +7. Other lines were more appetizing when they opened (Rockets / Pistons at 186.5) but the line has creeped up. Kings / Blazers is another total that has crept up and ruined the value.

#53Alright, new model is up and running. This one takes into account teams FG% and FT% as opposed to just offensive and defensive efficiencies. It'll be interesting to compare.

Orlando Magic Miami Heat -4 199 55.79% 42.93% 61.33% 37.75% 60.94% 37.62%
Phoenix Suns Portland Trail Blazers 1.5 202.5 42.90% 57.10% 60.81% 39.19% 40.16% 58.48%
Found a data error in the second sim - here are the new lines
New York Knickerbockers Chicago Bulls 3 202 63.25% 35.33% 64.34% 34.62% 59.13% 39.41%
Orlando Magic Miami Heat -4 199 57.23% 41.45% 62.29% 36.68% 62.64% 36.06%

#54Old Model ends up 2-3, while the new model avoids the Magic and goes 2-2. I'm going to pit these two head to head and see what happens. I feel like abandoning the old record and starting fresh. Previous old record was 60-37-5 (I'll exclude last night's games for time frame's sake).
