Betting NBA- the ups and downs
I have noticed in the NBA forum there are many bettors who are frustrated with betting the NBA cause of all the teams who dont show up and bad calls, missed free throws etc. Lets all work together here to make this easier for everyone and try to avoid the bad beats that come with the NBA. From my experience betting on NBA there are some things bettors should look at before placing there wagers.

I am going to make a list and please feel free to add to it.

    1. Depending on your method of betting, you need to be ahead on the schedule. What I mean is that you need to set a weekly start day for betting. I start on fridays . Whatever day you start take a close look at the schedule for 8-10 days before you make bets that night.

    2. Take a long look at teams that are starting out a road trip or are in the middle of one during your week. When placing your wagers make note of possible let down spots for those teams. For example if you start on Friday this week Portland is in New Orleans. While the blazers are off to a 2-0 start on this current trip and should win that game you need to seriously consider fading them on Saturday night in Charlotte.New Jersey is in Orlando on Friday and Saturday in Miami. There are many examples (OKC coming home on Sunday against Clips after long trip). Pick and choose your spots. You must understand that these letdown spots need to be taken advantage of.

3.Track teams on how many games they go not covering the spread. Right now the Lakers, Spurs, Jazz and Knicks havent covered the spread on the road yet. The clippers are 0-6 ats at home while the Cavs are 1-3. I know you might have bet on some of these teams and been burned already and say forget it. Thats when you lose more- look for the right spot. (Utah is in philly on Friday and in Cle on Saturday)

    4. History repeats itself. How many times have you seen in this league where teams who have no business winning in certain situations always seem to cover. The wiz give the cavs fits. Det against Lakers (Nov 17). Jazz never win Spurs court. LAkers at Blazers. There are so many spots like these where you need to pounce.

5.Coaching-while many coaches in the NBA do nothing to help their teams there are certain coaches in this league who are getting more out of their squads than what they should be. Look at Skiles in Milwaukee(beat Den last night)5-1 ATS, Westphal in SAc, Brooks in OKC. These teams are off too good starts and their coaches are holding their teams accountable.

Please join in here and offer some more Tips for the folks that are having a hard time. We all know the NBA has some shady refs but that is part of the deal when you bet on this sport.Whenever it looks like a sure thing in this league be aware.

    Good Luck

Thanks for the info Laker, I'm especially on the scheduling part. I'm really bad at this and need to prepare more in advance. I'm also with you on Mil/Sac. It's good to identify undervalued teams that play hard (especially on their home floor).

NBA season has 1,230 regular season games spread over 25 weeks

      About 50 games per week

Lots of ways to wager on each game > spread, total, moneyline, 1sthalf, etc.

To come up with around a 100 strong plays (out of 1,230 games) in a wagering category through out the season seems like a realistic way to go and give enough action while still having a good chance of winning.

        Thanks for this lakerboy,

I love basketball (played/coached) but have refrained from been betting it.

The moneylines are stretched and I find the spreads are distorted because of the habit most NBA teams have of shutting it down for the last minute of the game (if the game is +/- 8 or 10 points). With so many spreads between 4.5-9, countless tickets go down the tubes while the winning team goes through the motions with the clock ticking away.

With NCAA the players put out till the last second or face the wrath of the coach...so a single digit spread seems more legit.

Is there anyway to take advantage of this tendency...i.e. are there some teams which habitually build up leads then dog it, hence blowing the spread? The Lakers seem to do the opposite...turn on the pump (read Kobe) when they need it for the 4th quarter.

        Cheers,
        dogcity

Good thread for new NBA bettors, but I think it helps out a lot of seasoned ones as well. There are a lot of people who say they've been wagering NBA for a long time, yet they don't follow the precautions LB has pointed out.

You can definately use scheduling to your advantage...my only concern at this early stage......in the NBA season if the legs are tired enough..and the traveling has taken it's toll this early....look at Utah last week on the road for a example.....coming home off a long roadtrip..is a great play against angle.....I don't know about the last game of a extended road trip. Not sure how effective on short road trips...3 of for games.....just thinking out loud...LB
