Basketball Parlay of the Day - Saturday, 3/24/07

SBR will give the winner of the March Basketball Parlay of the Day Contest a sparkling new 19-inch LCD DVI Monitor! For those of you unfamiliar with the contest, here are the rules:


Post your 2 best basketball plays each day, NBA and CBB full-game Sides & Totals allowed only, no halves. Same game Side/Total parlays are ok. You have until five minutes before tip time of your first game to post the selections. Also note that all plays will now be graded against a uniform line! I will post the lines from Pinnacle at approximately 11 AM ET each day. Those of you wishing to make selections before then may do so without posting your lines, and they will be graded against my posted lines.

All parlays will be graded as 10.00 to win 26.00, and I will keep two sets of standings: the Official Standings will be based on parlay units won/lost, and the secondary standings will be on a game-by-game basis ranked by winning percentage.

The Catch: You must have SOME ANALYSIS for each play. Only needs to be one sentence, no big deal, although full paragraphs are ok too. Plays submitted with no analysis will NOT COUNT toward standings.

The player with the most units won after the games of March 31 will win the winner-take-all grand prize. Note that you must play at least 15 days (30 plays) during the month to qualify for the prize! In case of a tie in units, the tiebreaker will be the better winning percentage. If still tied, the contest will be extended with the tied players making one parlay selection per day at the start of April until the tie is broken. NO PASSES will be allowed during this extension period, and any of the tied players doing so will be eliminated regardless of the other player(s) results for that day.

Kansas -2 Think the Jayhawks are the most complete team in this matchup. I think they will be able to score the extra bucket in this game. Kansas is averaging 82.2 points in their last five games while UCLA is averaging 61.6.

Memphis +2 Think these teams will match up fairly well with Memphis carrying the burden of proving something. At 37 Oden probably won't have the legs required to run with these college boys. Think Memphis wins a close one. I actually like the Memphis 1st H play even better though.

Kansas -2: Yes the Jayhawks got a scare from Southern Illinois on Thursday, but the Saluki defense can do that to any team. The bottom line is that Kansas did what they needed to, posting their 14th consecutive victory in the process. Moreover the Jayhawks are generally not just getting by, that narrow SIU victory notwithstanding, as their average margin of victory during this steak has been +18.6 points per game. Now we have all the respect in the world for UCLA, but they were less than impressive down the stretch, losing to the likes of Washington and California, with the latter coming in the first round of the Pac-10 Tournament. Kansas is averaging more points per game offensively than UCLA this year (79.0 to 71.1), and their defense is allowing a lower field goal percentage against (37.3 to 42.6), so we are simply looking for the better team to prevail here.

Philadelphia 76ers +9: The 76ers are coming off of a covering 106-97 victory over Charlotte last night, which brings them to 9-3-1 against the spread in their last 13 games overall. Yes, Philadelphia is just 9-25 straight up on the road, but they are over .500 ATS in those games at 18-16, and their average road losing margin of -6.7 points would be good enough to cover this inflated number. The Heat are coming off of an embarrassing 95-70 loss at Indiana last night, and although Miami is 23-11 SU here at home, they are only winning those games by an average of 3.2 points. The Sixers won the last meeting between these clubs straight up in overtime, and we look for another nailbiter here tonight.

UCLA +2: I think these are very evenly matched teams and as such I would rather take the points. UCLA has done very well this year against top level teams and I expect another good effort today.

Memphis Grizzlies +11: Utah has not been very good lately and not good as a big favorite all season. Memphis should be able to keep this within the #.

Kansas -2
The Jayhawks will be focused for this one after having a lackluster performance 2 nights ago against SIU... I expect them to come with the effort that they had against Kentucky last Sunday!

Ohio State -2
I seriously doubt that the Buckeyes come with 3 poor performances in a row... I look for the Bucks to come out strong tonight and show why they are the BETTER team that has 33 wins in this game!

Charlotte +4.5 - Char is banged up for sure, and now add Felton to the list. And they're on a 4th game in 5 days. But they are scrapping to the end, and do not have a mail it in attitude as of now. NJ is not the most durable of teams, so them being on the road on a back-to-back should hurt them a bit. A solid NJ win is less likely than a Char win or close loss.

Charlotte/NJ under 195 - These teams are tired and wearied, and it could be that that will result in no D and a game where both score well into the 100s. But if that doesn't happen, the game will have a very very good chance of going under this high number unless there's OT.

MIAMI's game last night suggests they've been slacking off since banging out some wins, maybe a little tired right now as well. Probably too much credit is being given to MIAMI Hm ct, MIAMI is 4-0 ATS last 4 @Hm vs PHI but not with anything over a 7pt spread. PHI should hang within the #.

MEM+11
I don't buy the whole UTAH comes out pissed & stomps them deal. MEM has played them well over the years @UTAH, most being close games, last time MEM lost @UTAH by more than 11 was 2/2003.
MEM is 4-1 SU & ATS @UTAH sincs 1/2005. MEM 5-2 ATS as Rd Dog of 9.5-12 pts where UTAH is 1-4 ATS as Hm Fav of 9.5-12. UTAH is also only 1-5 ATS after scoring 85 pts or less. Too many points & I'll take every one. Also see MEM being up at the half.
