WNBA's Mystics -6 look to wash away the Sky as home chalk on ESPN2

By: "Reload" Joe Freda | reload.mysbrforum.com

Chicago and Washington are fighting for position in the East as the WNBA heads into the All-Star break. With the home court edge, Alana Beard and the Mystics are the play tonight.

Some teams are looking ahead to the WNBA All-Star break this weekend while some are looking to make that last big statement tonight. With only three games on the board, it is a light schedule as some players get set to pack their bags and head for Connecticut as the WNBA All-Star Game takes place there on Saturday. On ESPN2, the Chicago Sky are traveling to Washington after losing in New York yesterday and I will be backing the Mystics in this spot laying the six points.

Although some of you know I did take Chicago on Sunday when they played the San Antonio Silver Stars at home and cashed, the key word there is “home!” The Sky have had a lot of home-road disparity this season and despite an impressive home record, they have only had two wins on the road all year. One was one of the biggest league upsets of the season in Seattle straight up as a double digit underdog and another was an overtime win in Atlanta by only a point. I feel the Sky will be facing a home team in the Mystics who will be very focused on winning big against a conference opponent they know they can dominate on their floor.

In their previous visit to Washington this season, the Sky lost to the Mystics 81-72 after blowing a 10-point lead they had at the half. Like tonight’s spot for Chicago, that was a back to back situation and the Sky have lost big in both back to back spots they have had this season. The only other came in Phoenix where the Mercury put them away early and we could see the same thing happen here as this will be the fifth straight home game for Washington giving the Mystics an advantageous spot at the Verizon Center in this televised conference clash.

Washington has played some good defense during their current homestand, including giving up only 67 and 63 points in two recent games against New York and Los Angeles, respectively. This is opposite of how the Sky have played defense on the road as Chicago has not only given up an average of 88 points per game on the road this season, but also averages giving up over 20 points in each individual quarter of road games. Like their prior visit to Washington, this shows that no lead the Sky can muster is safe anywhere in the league – including yesterday’s game in New York where the Sky outscored the Liberty for three straight quarters only to get crushed big in the fourth.

Look for the Mystics to get their share of steals tonight also as the Sky turned the ball over 15 times in their last trip to the nation’s capital. Washington star guard Alana Beard who has been the heart and soul of the team since graduating from Duke has averaged 2.6 steals per game this season making her third in the WNBA there. Beard also had her top game of the season when Chicago came into town last month putting up 31 points against the Sky, as well as five assists making it the most there she has had all season in a game as well.

Crystal Langhorne of the Mystics had an impressive three steals in Washington’s most recent game in a losing effort to the Indiana Fever. This was the highest amount of steals Langhorne has had all season and tonight now gets a much softer opponent in the Sky. Langhorne is also a top five rebounder in the league right now averaging 7.4 per game, as well as one of the league’s top three shooters with a field goal percentage of 57%. She will face a Chicago defense tonight that has given up a league worst of 46% shooting from the field this season so she could really light it up here.

Lindsey Harding of the Mystics has also been turning a few heads in the league this year after being traded away from the Minnesota Lynx. She has been playing close to the form this season than originally anticipated for her in the WNBA with putting in double figures nearly every time out. This was unlike her performance in Minnesota last season where she was not putting in those kinds of numbers and perhaps has found the right niche of teammates here in Washington as she takes the floor each night with some solid young weapons like herself. Harding has been the Eastern Conference’s leader in assists per game at 5.3 and when last facing the Sky on the road in Chicago, she was able to notch six assists there which was the most of anyone on the floor that night.

The line for this game opened at Pinnacle Sports with the Mystics favored by 5 points and it has gone up to 5½ and 6 since then. I am agreeing with the early steam tonight and have made this one of my strongest plays of the season thus far. The line should have been made a few points higher here with the Sky already playing much worse on the road than at home and facing a Mystics lineup that looks ready to unload tonight. There are no excuses for Washington to not come away with a huge blowout win here as they would get to head into All-Star weekend above .500 and a solid third place in the Eastern Conference only a game behind the second place Connecticut Sun. Lay the points tonight with the Washington Mystics on ESPN2!
