Magic evaluating Nelson’s status for NBA finals

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP)—Orlando is evaluating All-Star point guard Jameer Nelson(notes) for a possible return to the Magic lineup for the NBA finals that begin Thursday night in Los Angeles.
Magic spokesman Joel Glass said on Sunday that Nelson’s rehabilitation from a shoulder injury is ahead of schedule but that his status remains uncertain.
Nelson has been out since early February with what had been called a season-ending shoulder tear.
Magic president Bob Vander Weide told The Orlando Sentinel after Saturday’s win against Cleveland that he wanted Nelson to take another MRI and consult with doctors for a possible comeback.
Nelson has been working out and has said he has full range of motion. But Magic general manager Otis Smith has repeatedly said there is no way Nelson could return this season.

-He has repeatedly said he's aiming towards next season, but maybe the Magic are hiding something here. Jameer Nelson would be huge, especially later in the series if/ when he has taken off some rust. Anyone else have any updates on this?

The team without Jameer beat Boston and Cleveland. Don't know if putting him into the mix in the finals would be the best idea in the world. However if he is 100% then this would affect my handicapping for the Finals big time (he was huge in two games against LAL this season).

Any impact he would give them would be emotional, cant expect this guy to step on the court and put up decent numbers. His shooting would be rusty at best, add to that he had a shoulder injury and who knows how good his jumper would be. He would not be in any kind of game shape, maybe he could give them 15 mins. The only thing I think he could give them is some penetration and kick that they lack without him, they live on this style of offense and the only player they have who can give them penetration on offense is Courtney lee.

I would have to agree. There is no way he will be anywhere close to being in game shape. Bynum made it back in time for the Lakers and still hasn't gotten back to pre injury form, Nelson would be a shell of his self and would probably hurt the team more than anything.

He has been jogging around and shooting a bit. It all depends, I would still take a rusty jameer nelson for some spark off the bench (with that being said - anthony johnson has been great). The possibility still intrigues me, I dont suspect he would be left wide open like a rafer alston was.

exactly, and stan is not one to risk something. have you noticed how reddick is buried in the bench, even battie, grtat and johnson not getting their mins even if the outcome of the game is obvious.

it will be out of character if stan lets him play

In fact, he'd be the one holding the Magics back if he were to return.

Yea a return here would not be smart for the Magic. He has never had a serious injury that he had to return from so he wouldn't feel comfortable on the floor at first. The team is in a grove without him right now it would have been the same if Bellichek had benched Brady for the Superbowl they stuck with him and look how that turned out.

lol, I wouldnt compare Nelson to Brady, but I get the point. I think you guys are underestimating this a bit, as he killed the lakers in both games, and he has been playing 5 on 5 basketball recently. All I'm saying is...a decent return will change this series a bit.

He did well for the first four minutes of the 2Q. Then Orlando lost the plot and never got it back, after playing very well without him in the 1Q.

I don't get it. How is a guy who hasn't played for four months going to be on the level of a team that has grown and gelled during these playoffs to a level they had never reached?

He should be ok for like 20 minutes per game.
