San Antonia Spurs vs. LA Clippers // Feb 24
Welcome back from the break!
Friday nights are made for good basketball. Two of the top four teams in the Western Conference clash when the San Antonia Spurs (43-13) visit the Los Angeles Clippers (35-22). The Spurs are second in the conference and 4.5 back from the Golden State Warriors, and the Clippers trail the Spurs by a larger margin of 8.5 games.
Saddle up with San An
The Western Conference will likely come down to two teams. Analysts and insiders can make the case that the Houston Rockets and even the Clips will make a deep postseason push, but really its between the Warriors and the Spurs. The Spurs have been superb on the road with a record of 24-7 this season. I know, shocking that Pop’s team is mentally tough.
The Spurs are 7-3 in their last 10 games and are on a two-game winning streak. Holding court with 106.7 points per game (11th in the league), the Spurs have always won with defence. This year, they are 2nd in the league and give up only 98.4 points per game. For a team with the second best record in the NBA, the Spurs have had trouble with the Clips. The Spurs have dropped the only two meetings that these two teams have had this season. In the past seven games between the two, the Spurs have lost five of them and are winless in their last three games at the Staples Center.
Doc’s patients
Players are back from the All-Star break, but not everyone. The Clippers are still without Chris Paul—he’s missed the past 14 games. Head coach Doc Rivers says he’s very close to being back but won’t rush it if Paul is not 100 per cent.
The Clips are 5-5 in their last 10 games but have won four out of their last five games. They should be coming back from the break on a five-game winning streak, but they blew a 12-point lead at halftime against the Warriors and crumbled in the second half. The Clips are a much better team at home this year. Although they are slightly above .500 on the road, at home they are 18-8. The Spurs’ stellar defence will be test tonight even without Chris Paul. The Clips are 8th in league scoring and average 108 points per game.
The Final Breakdown
Despite how good the Spurs are, they are 0-6 in their last 6 games, not only against the spread, but straight up as well when visiting the Clips. Clips take care of business tonight and cover the 4 points. Might sprinkle some $$$ on the +money ML as well.
