Doesn't mean he genuinely doesn't know still.

It means more than [you will] ever know," he wrote. "I'm sorry we even have to have this going on. But I promise ... I will do whatever it takes to get to the bottom of this and get back [out] there no matter what."

I agree with Mike, it is very unlikely for him to be able to come back from this situation. But, he is doing all the right things at this stage. He is not arguing with the result, he is co-operating fully & going into the rehab program. And he has said he will do what it takes to get himself clear. He is handling it much better than Mayfield anyway, so he is not burning his bridges at this stage. But in todays ecomonic climate you need either a sponsor behind you or results to back it up. Unfortunately for him, he has neither in NASCAR.

Opti, I wouldn't assume he was a proper regular user. I am not sure how often each driver is likely to be tested throughout the year, but I think it is more likely he used it recreationally every now and then. He probably used it a few times before, done the drug tests and not had an issue, and then BAM, traces in his body and he is done for. I really doubt it was something he used on a race weekend or before driving.
That would be almost last on my list of possibilities personally.

Too many millions and too much drug testing to risk it for that sort of reason imho.

I suspect he either had a genuine physical or mental dependance on the drug. Thought he needed it to help him win (maybe over come fear for example?). Or thirdly that it is a genuine case of him being slipped a mickey or accidentally ingesting it.

I'd be shocked off my feet if it turns out he was acting like some dumb ass teenager having a good time and just hoping it didn't happen to him. Guys not that dumb.

          Here's a thought.

I can buy synthetic cocaine, speed and marijuana over the counter at my local tobacconist. Guy at the shop tells me people buy a lot of it because they don't show up on the regular drug tests employers do.

Maybe AJ was partying with stuff like that and suddenly the drug screening system changed to look for it...

lets also keep something else in mind, and dont ask how i know this but i do

there are plenty of things u can take to mask any drug up to 24 hrs, but then again u have to know when the test is coming and drink it a few hours b4 it starts working

If he was such a regular user, then wouldn't he have tested positive a long time ago? He has been in NASCAR 5-6 years now. He must have been tested multiple times in that time period.

Or it could be synthetic as you say and the testing has changed.

I read a few weeks ago that they were re-testing blood results from Beijing & Athens Olympics with new testing procedures and they found 30 positives which they didn't pick up at the time.

Mayfield 'seems' to have had a true serious problem with Meth and he lasted out there racing.

Throw in Mikes suggestion about feeling confident with a masking agent too.

It's not outside the realms of possibility they can use for a good period without getting caught.

You'd hope post-Mayfield that should not be the case though.

All very good points. I guess the only ones who will know the full story are those close to AJ.

Mayfield comments on Allmendingers suspension: Jeremy Mayfield tried to fight his way back into NASCAR after being suspended for violating the sport's substance abuse policy. But his legal battle ultimately failed and, three years later, Mayfield remains suspended. So when Mayfield heard that suspended driver AJ Allmendinger would enter the sport's Road to Recovery program instead of fighting NASCAR, he understood why. "That's his only move," Mayfield, 43, said in a phone interview Wednesday. "He was in a different place in his career than I was at. I was to the point where I was tired I wasn't going to sit there and be a puppet no more. He has to be. & He's got to go through the Road to Recovery. For what? The guy is not a drughead, and everybody ought to know that he's not on drugs now."(see full post and many more quotes at the Sporting News)(7-26-2012)

And Mayfield should know whos a drughead and whos not eh!

Some crazy comments from Jeremy in that article. It looks like he has really stepped it up on the drug use.
