Shepard had just started start n parking around that time, due to lack of funds for tires. He hated it and so did his fans. The forum I was active on at the time setup a chipin page and donated the $1600(I think it was) needed for a set just the race before and he ran a sticker on his car for us to say thanks. But that still left him a set short of a full race from memory.

I think that was partly catalyst to those two coming up with the tires that time on the radio show.

Later on Smoke gave Morgan a couple of chassies and track crew help to help get him over the hard time hump he was having.
