He was just on another schedule because of his stupidity when running Logano into the wall. He lucked out that it worked for him.

They topped up on an early caution and stayed out twice when others pitted before the logano incident. They were playing for fuel advantage from the start.

The logano crash threw it all up in the air. But after that they also went for a late top up after having already stopped for the caution once, which is what gave them the win in the end.

They got to gamble on stops during the late cautions that the leaders couldn't do, because of that mix up with Joey. Being 2 laps down, you can pull something out your ass.
