Ex-Chelsea star Osgood dies at funeral at age 59
LONDON -- Peter Osgood, the outstanding Chelsea striker in the 1970s who helped the team win the European Cup Winners' Cup, died Wednesday after collapsing at a funeral. He was 59.

Osgood was attending a funeral in Slough, west of London, the team said. The cause of death was not immediately known.

The Football Association said there would be a minute's silence before England's exhibition game against Uruguay at Anfield on Wednesday in tribute to Osgood and former England manager Ron Greenwood, who died Feb. 9.

Osgood won FA Cups with Chelsea and Southampton and played four times for England between 1970 and 1974. Skillful with the ball and strong in the air, Osgood scored 150 goals in 380 games for the Blues and was nicknamed "The King of Stamford Bridge."

He played in the FA Cup final victory over Leeds United, scoring Chelsea's first goal with a diving header in a 2-1 victory in a replay. Osgood made two appearances as a substitute for England at the 1970 World Cup.

The following season, he helped Chelsea beat Real Madrid 2-1 in a replayed Cup Winners' Cup final. Osgood moved to Southampton in 1974 and played in the 1-0 upset of Manchester United in the 1976 FA Cup final. Osgood took home the trophy after the victory banquet and slept with it.

He played with the Philadelphia Fury in the North American Soccer League before returning briefly to Chelsea in 1978.
