SUMMARY
These two great clubs will write another chapter to their recent Rivalry with what should be a Saturday afternoon special at a packed MCG.
Geelong has held firm in 2010, maintaining its status as the team to beat. Last week the Cats rebounded from their second-half fadeout against St Kilda the previous week with a resounding win over North Melbourne. They controlled the match, even trying a few things as they touched the footy a record 505 times ahead of their showdown with the in-form Hawks. Their midfield was supreme while James Podsiadly (five goals) combined beautifully with small forwards Shannon Byrnes, Mathew Stokes and Travis Varcoe.
Hawthorn’s season looked to be heading the way of 2009 before seven straight wins salvaged its year - not only lifting them from the bottom rungs but propelling them into the eight and towards the top four. Their big guns - Hodge, Franklin, Mitchell and Rioli - have been largely responsible for the surge. Last week’s win over the Western Bulldogs was its best, but another against Geelong would have all potential finalists feeling rather anxious ahead of September.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Geelong’s Shannon Byrnes forms one-third of the Cats’ dangerous small brigade at ground level in attack. While Mathew Stokes and Travis Varcoe may get more attention, Byrnes has played every game this year, has booted 24 goals and is averaging 18 possessions a game.
Hawk Brad Sewell had a delayed start to 2010 due to injury but is yet to reach the same heights as previous seasons. In 10 matches this year he has gathered more than 20 possessions just once, and is yet to kick a goal. With Sam Mitchell missing this week, Sewell needs a big one against the Cats’ talent-laden engine room.
QUESTION MARKS
The Hawks led by four goals in round two - and an even greater margin in round 17 last year - before the Cats stormed home to steal the points in both fixtures. If the Hawks get in front again, will those matches come back to haunt them?
Geelong got four goals from Cam Mooney in round two, one from Brad Ottens and one from Steve Johnson. While James Podsiadly has arrived, at least two of those players won’t be there on Saturday. How will a different Geelong forward line fare against the Hawks?
Hawk Jarryd Roughead had one of his best games of the year last week, taking 10 marks. Can he ease the pressure on teammate Lance Franklin by booting a bag of goals?
WHO WILL WIN AND WHY
Hawthorn is gradually building but it needs to take a mighty leap to match it with one of the competition’s two standout teams, who still seem comfortably ahead of the chasing pack.
Geelong has plenty of depth and while Mark Thompson’s team has injuries, they also have plenty of stars to cover in most positions. The Hawks’ list is in close to the best shape it has been for almost 18 months, however the news this week of Sam Mitchell’s broken hand seems to further swings momentum the Cats’ way. As good as Luke Hodge has been this year, he’ll need to have a superhuman game against Geelong’s bevy of midfield stars.
PREDICTION
Geelong by 26 pointsComment -

#30ESPN showed the Victorian Football League back in the 80's. I didn't know the rules, but after watching for awhile you could begin to see the strategy. They were trying to get a "Maaahhhkkkkk", and then line up a kick. I would LMAO when the announcer would refer to a kick as a "torpedo punt" when someone kicked a spiral.
I hope they continue to show games because I think these games are very exciting and you can pick up some cash by following these guys here in the forum.

#31Hey guys - just a heads up if you're going to bet these games then you might want to check out a few of the threads in the 'More Sports' sub-forum to get some tips/advice as well. If you had, you would have learned that Geelong hasn't beaten Hawthorn by more than 11 points in something like 4 or 5 years.
It's definitely nice to learn that they're showing some of these games back home though!Comment -
