Brian Gabrielle: PGA Valero Texas Open
PGA: Valero Texas Open Game Time: 10/05/2007 04:00 PM
    By: Brian Gabrielle | bgsports.com

The LaCantera Golf Club in San Antonio hosts this week's PGA event as Eric Axley looks to defend his Texas Open title against a wide open field including Justin Leonard.

Watching Woody Austin fall in the water was not enough to warrant Presidents Cup viewing last weekend. If it happened on every hole, maybe.

This is a busy time of year for sports on TV and the Presidents Cup doesn’t come close to cutting it. As it happened, I couldn’t watch the Viking Classic, the regular C-list tournament in this diluted portion of the PGA schedule because the Golf Channel started coverage at 6:30 over the weekend, when the tournament was over. So I was checking the scoreboard a lot on Sunday because...

Chad Campbell won! A 50-1 shot! All of a sudden I’m heating up as the season is coming to a close. I feel like a guy with a 20-game hitting streak after the last game of the baseball season. Well, not quite -- but this is a huge win. With the Steve Stricker win a month ago I’ve had two big hits to go some way in salvaging the season.

At this week’s Valero Texas Open, take Steve Flesch (20-1), 1/6 unit: Flesch has a good record in San Antonio (he finished 12th last year) and he has very quietly won two tournaments this year, including two weeks ago at Turning Stone. He’s managed the two wins, one each in the last two months, despite Sunday rounds of 72 and 73.

Take Jeff Maggert (66-1), 1/6 unit: This is a short layout, giving short hitters like Flesch and Maggert a chance. Maggert finished T8 two years ago. He’s been playing well the last couple months with a T5 and T11 sprinkled in six straight made cuts. He finished T25 at Turning Stone two weeks ago.

Take Justin Leonard (33-1), 1/6 unit: I picked Leonard at Turning Stone, where he finished T13. He’s won the Texas Open twice and finished runner-up twice and as recent as 2004 had a T10 at LaCantera.
