I feel like someone just stepped on my planet after a lengthy stretch of isolation. Welcome Giuvara. Curling talk, it doesn't get any better than this.

Giuvara, my main man...love the avatar! Christopher Walken and oh damn, who's the other guy that's quirky like him? Not Steven Buscemi, although I like him. Who am I thinking of Guvvy?

I don't think I know right now who you are thinking of, SJ. If I were to guess: John Malkovich, Willem Dafoe (Raven Shaddock)?! Give me another hint!

Ahh man you are hitting the nail on the proverbial head. Both those guys are awesome especially Malkovich (reminds me of the lead singer in REM). One of my favorite unheralded movies is The Dead Zone. Kevin Spacey is another favorite of mine as is Ed Norton. Pacino and DeNiro of course. I think it was Malkovich but something is telling me I'm still thinking of another. Damn, love great actors!

I have seen The Dead Zone. A very good movie with a beautiful performance from Christopher Walken. My favorite Walken role is though in "The Comfort of Strangers" (the movie is a little shallow and it lacks a backbone; its older brother, "Don't look now" is way better), where his performance alone makes you watch the movie over and over again. I too love Norton, Spacey, Pacino and especially DeNiro (who I think can play every single role a screenplay writer can cook up and make it look real ). I also have affinities for Anthony Hopkins, Robin Williams, DD Lewis or Tom Hanks. Do great actors make great movies or it's the other way around? A great actor can sure make a bellow average movie bearable.
I want to thank you Jack for pointing out SJ's site. I've visited it this morning and had some good laughs in the "caught in the net" section. Some materials he gathered together there are simply hilarious. Beautiful collection, SJ and I also want to wish you good luck with the site.

Thanks to Aunty Jack for revisiting some old friends here in our unknown corner of SBR. I love movie talk. As a matter of fact Giuvara, here's something you might find interesting. I recently finished a manuscript (fictional novel), well I guess recently as in 6 months ago, and just received the copyright papers last week. Anyway, back in December I had a crazy idea. I absolutely know this is so cliche it's almost embarrassing but it truly would make a great screenplay. So, I actually tracked down where Kevin Spacey is because he would be a perfect fit for one of my characters. I talked to his assistant about it and she gave me an address to send it to in London. He's been performing and revamping the Old Vic Theater for the last several years. I still havent sent it as I wanted it copyrighted before putting it out there but am thinking I should pursue the traditional literary agent thing before I start dreaming of Kevin Spacey starring in my screenplay.

Oh well, can't have big things happen if you don't dream big, right?

Indeed, you can not. It would be amazing to have Kevin Spacey to play that certain character, but not too far of a stretch, as he is the guy to go to as an aspiring screenwriter. I know that he tends to help lesser known writers and screenplays to get adapted. I wish you succeed with your novel and it would be an honor for me to read it some day, after you have it copyrighted and find a clear path for it of course. Not to mention how thrilled I would be to see a movie based on it afterward.
I am sorry I don't know what you should do first, follow the "traditional literary agent thing" or don't wait anymore and send it to Spacey. If I were in your shoes, I would probably send that script to London, but there wouldn't be any guarantee that Kevin actually gets to read it. Good luck, whatever way you decide to go, J!

Thanks G for the kind words. Once I figure out which path to pursue, I will get your information and email the manuscript to you. My only concern is that it is a little bit light in terms of word count for today's publishers. Even fictional books are now commonly 300-400+ pages which makes most books come in about 60,000-85,000 words (with most on the higher end). To be considered a novel a piece has to be in excess of 50,000 words and mine currently sits at about 55,000. It appears in our "bigger is better" society that the books are getting thicker for the sake of girth rather than content. I enjoy reading John Grisham (when I do take the time to read, ironically) but I have found even in his books recently there is a lot of filler. His book, The Testament, was very good but I must know every nuance of the Amazon jungle and the river which runs through it. I would much rather have an author focus on the map of someone's character than the geography of their surroundings but that's just me. I would have found the book far more compelling if the book was a bit shorter. Sometimes brevity is not a bad thing. Nice to talk to you again.

I am not familiar with Grisham, or American writers as a matter of fact, although I've read my share of Stephen King, who's a master of filler. I am not a native English speaker and I'm more accustomed with European work, Eastern European particularly. I love Kafka, Sienckiewicz, Clavell. I would too always take a good dialog or introspection to any describing of the surrounding environment and would rather read ten smaller stories than a big one that seems to never end. The 1990 version of "The Stand" took me almost forever to end, as I have less and less time for reading.
I also like the commitment that directors of older movies had for developing a character. After seeing one of Hitchckock's or others' movies you really feel you get to know a character at the end. Most of the directors today are satisfied with adding a big bang and a special effect to the movie and throwing some dust in the viewers' eyes. I enjoy a block buster as much as the next guy, but I would like to see a little more of old fashioned character build up from time to time.

Edit: As American writers, I forgot about Mark Twain or Jack London, who were a great read in my childhood.

You are not a native English speaker? Well sir, you could've fooled me! Wow. Yes, directors are guilty of special effects filler are they not? I don't care whether I ever see another car chase or explosion again. I must be getting old because the "action" movies of today are so devoid of a storyline, it's pointless to watch them. Even the dramas stretch the bounds of realism more often than not.

So what is it you do for work G? You sound like a bright guy. I'm always curious as to what our fellow posters do in the real world. Because there is a real world outside of SBR...right?

! I've recently finished Engineering and planning to take on some postgraduate studies this fall, to try and go for a Master's degree. I am not currently employed in my field though and working for the time being in my home town, doing some IT maintenance for a local computer dealer.
How about you, J? It's obvious that you are a highly educated individual, that knows his way around figures of speech. What is it that you do?

Good luck with that. I am surprised you're an engineering "type". I don't mean that in a pejorative way. I say that because engineering minds are usually acute when it comes to spatial relations (something I severely lack) but bereft of highly evolved communications skills. I am stereotyping of course but the shoe seems to fit more often than not. Obviously it does not apply in your case. You speak English as well as anyone. That's amazing.

As for myself, I have a Bachelor's of Science degree with a triple major in Communications, Marketing, & Entrepreneurial Studies. I own a contracting business actually and am a free lance writer. However, if I had to do it all over, I would have majored in English and immersed myself in writing immediately after college. I would have starved for a few years, maybe forever, but I would have fulfilled a passion. Success of course is never guaranteed. However, I am making up for lost time. I will keep you posted and good luck in your post graduate studies.

I am more an analytical type, but with a little talent for picking up foreign languages and some communication skills. I more than compensate though with my severe lack of creativity or imagination, shortcomings that prevent me ever having a shot at being a writer, something that I sometimes wish I could be, as a profession that I very much love and respect. I have a couple of friends who are novel writers in their spare time, both of them at the beginning of the road and I enjoy seeing from time to time how their works evolve, again, something that I would like to do for myself but don't stand a chance of ever doing.
I am very happy that you are a professionally fulfilled person and I want to congratulate you for your Academical record. I realize that it took a large amount of hard work to get to where you are today and you had to sacrifice one of your passions in doing that. You certainly seem the kind of guy that succeeds in his enterprises and I have no doubt that your new writing path will be extremely fruitful. Good luck with it and I am eager to read one of your works.

Good luck with your endeavors. I am certain, based on our brief conversations here, that you are far more adept at crafting and communicating a story than you give yourself credit. The key is to devise a compelling story. After that, it's just telling a tale.
