Result - St Helens 18 Catalan 7 [L]

Disappointing to start this year out with a loss. The late scratch of Todd Carney an hour before kick off had an impact on the Dragons' attack, as did Willie Tonga being knocked out of the game in the first tackle. Part of my reasoning for this selection was the belief that Saints would struggle to put on points, as it proved. Catalan lacked attacking thrust due to their missing players and the game was a stop-start affair, quite a low quality slog actually.

I fancy the Robins to push Leeds very hard today. There should be a capacity crowd and I think Rovers made some decent signings over the Winter, especially Terry Campese who is a very crafty campaigner. Getting more than a converted try at home appears to be good value in my opinion. I can see this being a tight game and the difference maybe being the kicking game or a try from a mistake.

In a similar vein I think that Hull FC are more than capable to cover the number today. The weather is fine and it should encourage some open football to be played.

2-3 on the day which makes for a frustrating 2-4 for the first week. Hull KR had a good chance to cover as they led 30-16 just after half time but were blown away from there.

Well it's a long season and plenty of chance to make amends next week with the Championship kicking off.

Super League February 12 Salford Red Devils vs St Helens KO 8PM GMT.

I like Salford in this one, especially with Saints playing the world club challenge next week. This should be a game targeted by the Red Devils and I expect them to go all out in their effort to down the champions.

I'm not going to back Catalan again until they fire the coach. They are just not playing for him. Undisciplined, sloppy and lazy in defence, it looks as though the players are trying their best to get him the sack.
