"Slick as They Come continues her comeback campaign this Friday in the second race at the Timonium Fair. I'd be less than honest if I didn't admit that I never thought she'd be racing for a $4,000 tag in such modest company. In fact, modest is damning them with faint praise. The rest of the field consists of six mares whose best racing days are, frankly, behind them. The group will be going four furlongs, a type of race in which speed is of the essence. Slick has got speed; in each of her wins she has beaten the gate and, since she's breaking from the outside, she should do so again. Just to run down the field, the #1, Alleged Moon, is a 6 YO mare who hasn't been seen since Dec '07. She's trained by King Leatherbury, a legendary MD conditioner, but has no early speed and is stuck down on the inside. #2, Bob's Valentine, is a 7 YO mare who has raced 5 times this year with a couple of thirds to her credit. She's another one with no early lick. #3, Aqua Pierra, a 6 YO mare, has started once in January and finished up the track. She won just one race last year. # 4, Quite a Catch, is a 5 YO mare, has yet to start this year. She won four times in 2007 and does have early speed. #5, Shore Girl, is an 8 YO mare is zero for six this year and did not start in 2007. #6, Crimson Flame, a 6 YO mare, hasn't been located with a search warrant in two races this season in Jan and Feb. However, she was able to win three times in 2007.
All of the other entrants' races were at the $4000/5000 level. Slick broke her maiden at $25,000 and later won an entry allowance $25,000 race, so her class stands out. To make a long story short, if she beats the gate, she wins. If she doesn't, it will have been her last race for us."
