OK. Let's remember to see Remember the Chief next out as well.
This poor horse was completely unprepared for the break. As soon as the starters gate man was out of the way, he sprang the latch. WTF.!!
This horse was totally unprepared to break when the starter hit the button. She broke on her left lead, the WRIONG lead, and as far as I could tell without watching the head on, she ran on that left lead all the way. I never saw her switch. Her head was still turned to the left. WHAT ???
I totally don't understand why the starter did not at least give her a second or two to get herself together.
This is another MUST watch when she runs back. That was actually a great effort on only one lead the entire race and she is trying to finish !
Look for a much better effort next out as long as the starter gives her a friggin second or two to get balanced. Jeez.
If we are doing a must watch or play next out list, you have two prime candidates with these last two.

it's really amazing how often these army mules have legit excuses when they run subpar..it's great to know this stuff for follow up plays and to further confirm he is producing solid runners overall even when it's not obvious to the untrained eye ..great job str

on a separate note thought you might find this race interesting
carter stakes at aqu (army mules finale) ..don't really have an opinion but deep solid field
couple of interesting notes
..
ed allard shipping from laurel with a horse that's only run there in 5 career starts (won 4 of them)
linda rice has an "8yo" she claimed 4 starts back who ran a career high figure last start

Good luck Batt. Were all rooting for you.
Thanks STR! watching him in the walking ring... he looks antsy.... but he has done this in the past.

Straight No Chaser Race Recap
Straight No Chaser failed to fire today after a rough trip in the Dubai Golden Shaheen.
He stumbled at the start, and that pretty much did him in. Forced to attempt to rate while in between horses, he took tons of kickback and never looked comfortable at all. He continued to drop back while really fighting with the dirt down the backside and into the turn, and at that point was left with an impossible task over a very speed-friendly surface. He made a mild run in the lane and did seem to be moving fine once the field spread out and he wasn’t taking so much kickback.
We’ll see how he comes back, but at this point it just seems like a race that you draw a line through and move on. You simply can’t have that early trouble against world-class sprinters—especially on that track which is historically kind to speed on World Cup night and which has been notably producing a lot of kickback today. The fact that the winner, who was 65-1 in the U.S. pool, went gate to wire is further evidence that the track made an impact.
As we’ve mentioned previously, having already locked up a stud deal for Straight No Chaser does take a bit of the sting out of what was no doubt a disappointing outing. We’ll get our champ back to the States, regroup, and get him ready for a productive second half of the season.

so at ml odds hitting today's parlay +870
generally speaking a WP bet vs a win bet of the same total amount pays about 75% of the win only bet
so say 10W vs 5WP @ 5-1 odds
10W =60
5WP = 30 +15 place (about) 45
so about a $5 profit investing $10 as a consolation ..think that is worth doing vs the straight win bet

I have not seen this race but I don't care for the " antsy" part. I was hopeful that he had matured somewhat away from that especially after his last 2 races. But in his defense, it does not take much , especially at a different venue, to get any horse wound up pre race.
Sorry that occurred Batt. Seems it might take an event like this to beat him between the pre race nerves and the bad break.
He will be back. I think your trainer has done a super job with him and most likely will off this race as well.

Thanks for the heads up JBEX.
Allard's horse ran great. He has always been a top notch trainer wherever he ran.
Let's see if Linda's horse, who ran a respectable 4th wins next out. That was a winning race in a lot of spots and she has always struck me as a trainer that when her horse gives a winning effort but cannot beat that competition, she makes it a point to get that horse in a spot next out where if it repeats that effort, it is good enough to win.
Let's see about that next race.

yeah allard's horse ran great..did all the dirty work and just beat at the wire ..$120k difference in purse ..guess you feel good about the effort but the money part stings especially with all the effort to ship here
with linda rice's those races he ran at aqu carry an 80k+ purse and with what they won already with him might try that again .. maybe less chance he's taken for $80k also
just saw the race she claimed out of where he just missed was a drop from the bold ruler stakes ..maybe a similiar choice for next race

That first run down the hill can be tough to overcome. But I don’t put anything past the AM,s.
She has never missed the board and getting better every start. Unreal.

yes I agree and lot's of repect from ml maker imo factoring she's never been on the grass..interesting to me 2 consecutive dirt wins ,second one being on new years day and they give her more than 3 months off and switch surfaces ..resumed workouts fairly quickly since that last race also

Yes JBEX. I am not making this stuff up. And if I see one that is not trying or looking for a reason to disengage, I will point that out. So far all I have seen is hard trying, determined horses running hard. Only exception are a few that have not had the lightbulb go off yet.
In some cases, it could be the horse but for the most part, I would be looking at the trainer.
They damn near all do the same thing. Try like crazy.

The rider immediately became concerned actually just before the 1/4 pole ( red and white at top of the stretch). He either heard something or felt something and by then the horse was quite concerned and therefore a bit confused as well. He was never really in hand down the backside so the horse knew something was not perfect because he seemed to be focusing on whatever it was and not the race or the riders instructions. Being an Army Mule, he ran through it but it was evident that the horse was not himself even before the turn from the 1/2 mile pole ( red pole before the far turn) through the 3/8ths pole( green and white into the turn.)
Don't know if the not switching leads was a soreness problem or a breathing, bleeding internally problem that preoccupied the horses focus away from switching leads. Finally switched late in the stretch most likely when the horse was out of contention and being eased up and the horse kind of let down and let normalcy creep ,back in. Hope that makes sense.
Also, hope the horse is OK.

He looked comfortable grazing. Hard to see any subtle joint filling on a video like that . It is usually very subtle and you need to feel those legs every day or every other day at the least to have a firm grasp on the heat, filling, etc. I saw some white marks on a couple of legs in various spots that could have been remnants of poultice applied but that's probably standard procedure post race.
If he WAS off, he looked comfortable there. Doubt anything would be serious but it doesn't take much as Batt can attest to.

I always immediately go visually to the legs , feet and body when I see all these horses. Just a habit. Nothing seemed different but a view is just a start. His demeanor was fine and he seemed calm and comfortable. Those white smudges we’re probably uptight, a poultice that is pre mixed but that can be routine for the soundest of horses.
I will watch the rerun but from what you guys said, it sounded like it made sense too me.
I would have signed a contract to have all mine look that good post race .

yeah..won by 7+ and looked like she wasn't asked for much to do it ..didn't even realize going in that it was a filly ..other cool thing is it's out of a liam's map mare and wesley ward is the sole owner ..has to say something about the sire that he would buy one for himself
