Wagering Psychology and the profit machine
Ok, I figured I'd start a little discussion on why we make the types of bets we do and why we use these types of bets to generate profits. Basically state the type of wager you make and why you make that type of wager it could be anything from straight win wagers to exotics like the tri, super and pick(whatevers). Basically this is to see the types of wagers made by board members and it is to see how the psyche of each player effects the type of wagers they make. After some data is collected and seeing which types of wagers the majority of players here make I will examin those types and explain the given psychology behind those types of players. This is a fun and interesting little exercise that is great on slow days like ohh, mon&tues and it gives players a chance to see why certain types of players bet the way they do...

Ok, since this is my thread I'll go first. Currently I play mostly to win only because of the handicapping I do and methods I use it lends itself best to that type of bet based on value of the selection. I used to only play pick 3&4's because I found I was not very good in horizontal exotics and I always had trouble choosing that 2nd and 3rd place finishers and really narrowing my choices to make those scores in exactas and tris really worth it plus the swings in wins versus losses was much greater in these types of bets. So I played the pick3s&4s because I was good at narrowing the contenders and with some price entries coming in this style of betting can really pay off. But you are laying out more so your overall profit may dcrease based on the chancs of hit 1 in9 with a nine horse field or 1 in 27 with three nine horse fields. But I now play win only because I can now play for value up until post time I and I can play or pass the race based on final odds which you cannot due playing the pre race pick wagers. Hope this gets this thread rolling

I look for certain races where the favorite is in post position 1 or 2, and then single this horse to come 3rd in trifectas. The overlay in favorites finishing 3rd in tri's can be unreal.

Right now i allways bet to win unless there is a big carryover on a Pick. Three reasons for this

        1) Takeout.....lowest takeout around my parts is straight W/P/S betting and since P/S is a profit eating machine, i am left with win betting

        2) Identifying value.....You already know before the race if you have done your work, what each horse's true odds should be, therefore the tote board makes it very obvious where to find value. Yes you can do it for exactas, but obviously it's much harder to calculate and since you are always under time constraints it makes things very hectic. Tri's and supers, you can only guess, educated guessing yes, but you have no payouts to analyze so you never really know if you are getting an underlay or overlay until the payouts are up.

        3) I use to bet win 4's and superfectas even with the higher takeout but this was BEFORE this ridiculous nonsense of 10cent supers and 20cent Win 4's etc. etc. Any overlays in these pools, which were common, are completely gone since every small better has a chance to get a piece of the pie and every slice that gets taken out leaves less for me. I use to survive and thrive by taking down one Pick 4 or one superfecta pool a year (WEG circuit so anywhere from $30-50k in the pool depending on the night) and a few other half or 1/3rd pools, but nowdays what use to be a pool shot is now pieced in so many different directions that the value is long gone from these bets.

Wagering strategies change over time depending on the ebb and flow of the game and changing with it is one of the key's to being successful.

I love the pick 3. I look for a race where i see 2 winners in two of the races (4-1 and above). then in the other race i pick all the horses (usually a race where the favorite is going off at 4-1) the pick all race is the most important because you want a long shot in this race. Had some nice pick 3's this way. You have to choose your races and day you wager

I would have to say that 90% of the time I play my selections to WIN Only! I will however Place my selections also if they are at 10-1 or more ... I play to Win because you can always turn your whole day around with 1 or 2 good horses or minimize your losses. It's very hard to make up your losses in the Place hole & even harder to make up in the Show hole when you get behind. Put your money where it best belongs!
I will also KEY or Part Wheel my best plays in the Exactas & at times in the Trifectas. I find this works best for me with my style of play!

As Always Best of Luck & may the Horse be with you!

you played 1 tri the other day and you hit, thats crazy stuff right there

and it was a deadheat to boot, so 2 for the price of 1 lol

if it wasent a deadheat you would have had an ever bigger score, dam those dead heats
