Can someone explain to me why you would run a horse without Lasix.I was under the impression that lasix helps the horse breathe better and prevents bleeding.Why would you not take advantage of this.

Costs for one! Its about 125 bucks. The other reason I've heard is the some horses react to it as if it is a depressant, taking some of the starch out of them. That's a vast minority however. I also heard Lasix is effective in helping mask testing for other drugs. As for as handicapping if there is no lasix from a big barn I consider it a negative. I'm less judgmental if the horse hails from a small outfit.
There are others at this site who have personal knowledge of this. It could be useful to see their comments.

That are a few trainers that won't use it. The now retired Jack Van Berg was one of those. He stated it was harmful to the animals overall health.
