Payout differences for Place and Show
Could someone explain this to me? I understand that the payout would be less for place and show respectively, but how much less?

If A horse has odds of 5:1 and the bettor places a $10 bet for the horse to show, what percentage of $50 would that bet pay out?

Also in a similar situation, a horse having 10:1 odds and a $10 bet is made for the horse to place, if he places or wins how much is the payout?

    Thanks for the help guys

There is no exact percentage payout because place and show pools are based on the tote which is determined by the amount of money on each horse in the pool. But generally i would say a place bet on a 10-1 would pay around 7-8 on average, but it depends on who wins too. If a favorite wins, you would most likely get less money than say a 99-1 because more money would go to pay the place wagers if a favorite doesnt place.

Sometimes you have higher for show because of the favorite not getting in the money. I have seen huge payoffs because of bridge jumpers.

generally a good estimate is that place horse will pay AROUND the dollar amount of his odds per $1... For instance, if your horse is 5/1 and there are no HUGE favorites that run in or out of the money, they SHOULD pay in the neighborhood of $5..Generally in the place pool you're not going to get bridgejumpers, so it shouldn't make a gigantic difference if a 1/5 wins..

Think these guys have summed it up.Each has it's own pool.Nothing says that the 2nd choice in the show pool might not be the 4th choice in the place pool. If those are the pools you play ,you must watch those pools to determine the order of favoritism.

all separate pools. win odds not necessarily indicative of payoffs. depends who places or shows with said horse.
