#21 Rich Strike 30/1 *AE*
Needs a deflection to draw in. Positive to see the COMP triggered when debuting on today's main track as a juvenile. Good developmental moves to follow-up with NPT/REV combo even though slow running lines. Has since moved to synthetic and shown a sudden uptick lately to 68/76. Can't blame connections for hoping to get in with a runner suddenly feeling great. Would figure to have a lot of horses to pass late here and unlikely he can do it with a pretty slow foundation compared to the field. Honestly though, if he does get in, he's probably worth the value to include on your deep exotics tickets thinking he could be 70/1+ and while probably too slow, is improving nonetheless.

That was just a crazy come from behind win. He had to zigzag through the field down the stretch and the commentator didn't even mention him until the last second. You see those late pushes from big favorites but from an 80-1 alternate that's pretty insane.

yeah no doubt another thing overlooked was that Rich Strike had a dominant win by 17 lengths 9/21 on the CD Main Track. While he looked too slow on paper in retrospect there were quite a few things to like about his chances especially at 80/1

Great point. I just watched the overhead. That was an impressive ride. He was flying in between the others and down the inside. What an exciting finish. Would like to have seen Mattress Mac's expression during the last quarter mile.

imo one of the best angles there was to play him at a price..understand was vs maiden claimers BUT

close to a fair pace..
breaking from the rail in an 11 horse field..
one of the toughest distances to run (1 turn mile)..
getting it as a 2yo in september in only his 2nd start and with first time blinkers

Yeah valid points JBEX. Have to say that because Strike Rich was an A/E horse, and last in I overlooked his PP's and the things that Predicteform said about him. Plus he did look slow on paper even though his last race was his best figure albeit on the Tapeta at Turfway. Mo Donegal was my main play as I thought the race had the potential to fall apart. According to the BRIS Mo had the best late pace ratings in the field. But I read on Twitter today that Timeform had Strike Rich with the best late pacing at 110. Anyway you live and learn. On to the Preakness. Interested to see if Strike Rich runs and what his ML is?

Rich Strike Exits Derby With Vigor, On to Preakness

Rich Strike will stay at trainer Eric Reed's farm near Lexington, Mercury Equine Center, until the week of the Preakness Stakes (G1) and then be sent to Pimlico Race Course.

That would make sense. I watched him run last Saturday and he ran Great ! Gotta say that Chad does an incredible job in general and certainly did on Christopher Jack. But when I saw him come back to the winners circle, he displayed all the signs of a " tired horse" off a HUGE effort. Big crease down his hindquarters and he had that look in his face as well. I don't know that horse at all but it seemed obvious to me.
When they interviewed Chad right after the race and pressed him, he left the door open. Smart move. But in my mind I was saying I would be very surprised.
Cutting him back to 7/8ths also makes perfect sense.

he was 2/2 as a 2yo breaking his maiden impressively at saratoga and then winning the champagne at belmont in the same manor..they wanted to point him for the derby of course but he had shin issues I believe and they had to change plans

I think the woody stephens distance makes sense also and good timing to run in the haskell 5 weeks after that..if he can win both he will be undefeated with a win a furlong apart from 6f to 1 1/8 (twice at a 1 turn mile which is even better)..guessing these races might be just as important to his starting stallion fees than the actual purses themselves
