Harness Racing is KILLING me right now...
So just broke into the sports scene hard about a year ago when I turned 21…been on and off before that..

Ever since I was little my mom always took me to the dog track because it was close by...

Within the past month I've stared paying more attention into horse betting. It was easy to get the hang of as all the bet types are just like dogs, except I realized the jockey has a lot of affect on the horses..

Anyways thoroughbred I am fine with, seem to be hitting most my picks to show, some to place..

HOWEVER, everything I have made betting sports or playing poker it seems to be hitting the piss when I start placing harness racing..

Are there any sort of secrets I am not picking up on? It seems some horses finish MUCH better than they start.. or start MUCH better than they finish...

winter seems to bring out the "chitty" in harness racing.....stakes are over and a lot of tracks shut down. I chill for a few weeks every new year. with that said im off to AC in a few hours to relax and possibly play some ponies at the Borgata. not expecting much.

god sounds like a blast… I will be in vegas soon enough though. Ill be out the weekend of 22-26 but yeah I mean thoroughbred seems to be running true the top percentage of jockeys coming in top places and odds seem about correct…

cecil would you mind if I picked you mind every now and again?

final 1/4 of his most recent race only

since you're playing place and show and apparently trying to grind out small profits in the harness game, try playing the horse with fastest final 1/4. they hit the board with alarming frequency. just make sure it's at the track you're playing (no shippers) and watch the date of his last race(within the last 7-10 days) only his most recent race qualify for this.

you need the program. past performances. you can get some for free. such as woodbine harness (on their website click standardbred then free program downloads) also on usta website click strategic wagering bar and you get 4 races from either yonkers, northfield, pompano, freehold, meadowlands or all of them if they are running that day. have you been betting these harness races blind (no pp's) or just stabbing away? you can purchase full cards from either drf, trackmaster, equibase for about 1.50 a program. having a printer helps but is costly. or just view them on your screen if feasible. carefully look across horses past performance line to find the final 1/4 time. usually it will be like 26.1-29.4. watch the date of the horses last race (2 weeks off or more toss out the horse) just make sure the horse raced at the same track he's at tonite. find the fastest final last 1/4 of the remaining eligible horses and go from there.

make sure horses last race was a betting race not a qualifier. this will be noted by a NB at the end of the horses line. this time of year with cancellations you might have to bend a little on the 7 day rule but don't play any horse off a qualifier as they rarely have a top effort in them until they get a real race under their belt.

I have been betting without the paid PPs and program…I have found a couple sites that had them but I think it was for dogs and thoroughbreds.. last night was the first time I had paid for one online during the races.. just viewed it online didn't even think of printing it off which would've been nice to do.

Before for harness I was checking the odds online, watching the odds move on the live stream and then listening to like the reports or the announcers and what they were saying..one track talked way more than others and I really liked that..

What I also noticed was the odds online never changed from where the race book opened that day which worked out very well for me when I hit the trifecta..

I decided I am going to stop betting ponies in general unless I have the time to: sit down, buy the PP and programs, have time to watch from race 1 until the end, and enough spare bankroll to really make all this worth my while.

Thanks for all the help unusial! just out of curiosity it seems you are really into horse betting, Im wondering how much of your bankroll you have for horses, sports, and then poker or whatever else and if you have a set percentage set aside for each and then what they are if you do or if you just sorta go in and if you win you win if you lose you lose sorta thing.

would never play poker as i don't like betting directly with people. can't bluff. am an easy read. i keep playing until i lose my bankroll and then start over with a fresh one. if you're betting horses offshore and playing trifecta's be careful because they have limits on payoffs. what you need is an ADW account if you're in the US and your state allows it. you will absolutely be guaranteed to be paid if you want. plus you can watch any race live with up to date odds and get the programs from them directly. i'm more into thoroughbreds than harness but do both. the takeout on horse racing is way too high and competition from other types of gambling is eroding the game. along with that an aging customer base will eventually doom it. just avoid the favorites as much as possible and pay attention to str and cecil on this forum. as they are really knowledgeable.

Maybe pass on harness for a bit. I know on Mon and Tues now it is a slow day race wise.

site weak in structure. have to sift through trainers to get free pp's. much better to join twinspires and get free pp's as long as you wager a minimum of 2.00 a card. so technically they're not free but.....although i'd rather have drf pp's they require a 25.00 minimum of wagers per card.
