new to horses

i'm looking to get into horses but don't totally understand how to make my approach.

i understand the concepts of a exacta and trifecta play but don't know how to make sense of horses totally.

i grabbed a quick $15 sheet for the hell of it today of garotipsheet.com but am still just as puzzled looking at that lol....

been making large money with nba and nfl but want to expand my horizons and everyone tells me horses make great money if played properly.


any help would be appreciated. don't mind sharing some sheet info either.

Wager for entertainment purposes only. Horses are a tough game to beat because the take out is high and so many decisions to make. Most likely you will lose in the long run. But you can have some good entertainment if you keep it in perspective. GL.

If you want to win long term you have to be commited to it. You gotta follow a circuit or circuits very closely. Get to know the horses, trainers and to an extent the jockeys.

A lot of good advice already. To further it, it is suggested that if you are serious about wanting to profit from betting on horses that you should know how to read past performances*(PP's). There are many different types of PP's, Brisnet, Thorograph, Daily Racing Form, Ed Bain Stats and many others, it will ultimately be up to the student to decide which is used or even which combination is used in their analysis.

Knowing the past racing history of the horses that are bet on, or bet against, is paramount to long term success. Through practice over time the handicapper learns to recognize patterns that will lead to profit.

Good luck to you if decide to choose this road, many here have years of experience and they always seem willing share, please search threads as there are a ton of posts in here that will surely advance your cause, for everything you can't find just ask more questions.

I think how you go about attacking the game depends on your bankroll and bet size.

If you are a $2 bettor then I would try to utilize all the Free information out there like BRIS PPs/Equibase.

If you have a solid bankroll there are plenty of options but it adds overhead that you will have to win before you start profiting on the year.For instance I have about $2,200 in overhead that I have to clear before I profit on the year.DRF PPS,Clocker Workout Reports,Pace Figures.It ends up seeming very small by the end of the year though and I feel I put together the perfect package of data for a pretty cheap price all in all.



PAST PERFORMANCE OPTIONS


DRF Formulator PPs = The best overall information source all things considered.Although the Moss Pace Figures suck(Don't use them).Replays,Charts,Every trainer stat known to mankind.

BRISNET PPs = A true bargain.You can get them for free for most races if you google around and find whobet trks2day.Only downside is they are not interactive like drf and they are computer generated which IMO is a big flaw.

Ragozin PPs= Is like paying diamond prices for a cubic zirconia.There method is old and flawed.

Thoro-Graph=Good Information but waaaaaaaaaaay overpriced like its competitor Ragozin.There figures are great at evaluating horses but the problem is the good horses are favorites.These figures are strictly for claiming trainers or someone who like to make private purchases of horses in training.It is beyond foolish for a everyday handicapper to add these to their overhead.Tons of better options.


I'll keep my clocker and pace figures to myself .I like to think the fact not many use the combination of things I do gives me an edge.



As for the handicapping process I always say for beginners ,Start with the frontrunners.Try handicapping who is going to set the pace and when you get good at that start betting the fastest horse you think is going to set the pace.

I would follow that up with more precise....follow a few tracks, but try to follow circuits. You can look at places like Del Mar / Santa Anita / Hollywood park and see a lot of the same horse / Jockey / Trainer.

Same with Belmont / Aqueduct etc. Start looking at these and focus in.

ive been using this system my buddy came up with, mainly working on Adecquet but also used it on Parx and seem to profit 100-250 a day playing $50 wagers per race. Last week ended up $650 for the week. nothing huge but its $650

Parx is just about the worst track you can bet on.Besides their ridiculous takeout rates its basically run like Tijuana,Mexico.You'll see horses run like Secretariat in a 10k claimer only to get beat 30 lengths the very next race while dropping in class.

Here is how HANA rates the tracks.(Parx is 61st of the 68 rated)

ive noticed playing it today.

typically i just play "place" in my races to give me better chances to win but ive lost a couple today...down 200 with parx today.....adequet has made me best money so far

In terms of handicapping, horse racing may be the steepest mountain you can climb. But the climb is well worth it. Because not too many people are willing to make it. It helps to try to think outside of the box, and combine the elements in unexpected ways.
