First-Time Bettor - Is It Safer to Start with Moneyline or Spread Bets?
I’m completely new to sports betting and just signed up here after reading a few threads. I’ve been a sports fan (mostly NFL and NBA) for years, but I’ve never actually placed a real wager before.

I’ve been reading up on some beginner guides, but I still don’t fully understand the best type of bet to start with. I get the basic concept of moneyline vs spread, but I’m not sure which is “safer” or easier to get into as a complete beginner.

Also, are there any specific teams, leagues, or strategies that are more forgiving for new bettors? I’d rather not blow my whole bankroll on rookie mistakes
Any advice would be appreciated — even links to beginner threads or your own first-time stories would help a lot! Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the maddening world of sports betting! I would say that it depends on what sports and do you go more with favorites or underdogs. Football is just around the corner and it's the biggest sports for American betting so I'll stick w/ that sport and include NFL and colleg football. I see some posters betting and relying heavily on ml dogs. I don't in the long run it works in football and neither does ml favs. If I started off again as a beginner, I would generally do most of my wagers on the spread whether you picking dogs or favs. If the spread is under 3 pts, then might want to consider going ml, especially for dogs.

Whatever you decide, I recommend creating a pick thread and see how it goes for you. That's one thing I wished I had when I first started off. It's a great way to track how you are doing in terms of picking w-l record. Anyway, good luck!
