But Jones is much more about having a 'system' QB than most coaches. I still like the pick quite a bit, especially now at +3.5.
Illinois line is moving, too. It might see +10 after all.

#46pags I was also looking at the SMU/Rice game. I wanna see how JJ's offense carries over to SMU not to sure how much points they can put up in there first game. JJ offense is all about timing and WR's running routes on how the D is playing them. But, I down with SMU on this game. I know JJ will have his team ready. GL this season pags. #53Pags, good stuff.
But I have to ask, June Jones in your top 5 college coaches?
Pete Carroll, Jim Tressel, Urban Meyer, Bob Stoops, Mark Richt....which one of those coaches would you replace with June Jones?
I certainly respect what Jones has done, but I consider Jones to be very similar to John Jenkins when he was at Houston with Andre Ware. Wide open offense, but teams caught up with him. I think guys like Dan Hawkins who built up the Boise State program have done more than Jones has at Hawaii. But that is just me, and this is a good discussion.
Best of luck to you this season.Comment -

#54durito,
thank you bud...good to see you around...GL to you as well...
martin,
let me put it this way, with each of the five coaches whom you've mentioned, how do you think they would have faired the last 9-10 years at Hawaii? with zero facilities? zero recruiting budget? playing in an average conference?...Jones couldn't have done any worse than lose the last two national championship games...Meyer is the only coach that had tremendous success at the mid-major DI level (much like Jones did at Hawaii), whereas the others came from the NFL or were assistants at bigger DI programs...have you ever stayed up late at night and watched every play of a Hawaii game?...have you ever seen him make play calls that shred through Pac 10, Big 10, Big East and MWC opponents with above average athletes at best?...why is it that you think he finally said **** it and moved on to SMU?...because he was making chicken ala king out of chicken shit!...
Dan Hawkins?...are you serious?...the guy took over for Dirk Koetter for 4 years and he built the Boise program?...Koetter and Peterson have had just as much to do with the success of the program than Hawkins, not to mention Houston Nutt who was there before Koetter! Jones took a team that in 1998 went 0-12 and in his first year he got them to a bowl game. Who does that?!...have you ever heard of a June Jones' coached team being accused of recruiting violations or problems within the program? nope, whereas all five coaches that you mentioned have had problems...he does things the right way and continues to fly under the radar, and cash tickets for me...I'll take it...
I stand by my comment that Jones is one of the top 5 coaches in the country...Comment -

#57Pags,
I can name a coach who has done more than Jones very easily with even fewer resources. See if you can name this coach.
He took over a program that went 0-10 the year before he arrived, in fact, they were 1-19 in the two season prior to his arrival.
Never had a single recruiting problem.
Has won just as many bowl games as June Jones
Operates with a recruiting budget and facilities...and stadium that is considerably smaller than what Jones had at Hawaii.
Paul Johnson is the answer. Johnson not only didn't have a recruiting budget, he didn't have scholarship football players at Navy. Yet, I can make a strong case for him doing more at Navy than Jones at Hawaii.
You also need a history lesson. Hawaii has been down this road before. In from 1990-92 they had a very good football team coached by Bob Wagner. In 1990 they finished with 9-10 wins, and blasted the BYU team led by Heisman winner Ty Detmer. In 1992 they finished the year with 11 wins and a Holiday Bowl win. They also beat Oregon, Pitt, and Illinois that year. Success at Hawaii has been achieved before.
Oh yeah, where is Bob Wagner these days? He is a high school athletic director on the big island....which is probably where June Jones will be when he washes out of SMU.
And just for the record, if you want more examples of guys who have built of struggling programs here ya go.
Greg Schiano. Terry Shea left Rutgers on a 4-20 streak. Schiano hasn't been too shabby as of late.
How about guys like Randy Edsall, Howard Schnellenberger? Guys who took 1-AA programs and have crossed over to 1-A, and done well. You don't think that is tougher than what Jones had to work with at Hawaii?
This idea that June Jones is a top 5 coach is silly.
Jones did a nice job at a small program, but let's not get carried away. Other coaches have done what he has done, some have done it better with even more restrictions that Jones had.
But don't let history and facts get in the way. June Jones...coaching legend.Comment -

#59Big D,
you are welcome bud...GL to you this season...
crazyl,
thanks man...
martin,
Paul Johnson is an excellent example of someone who did something similiar to Jones, and if you would have followed my picks on here the last 3 years you would have seen how often I bet on Navy and how often I called Paul Johnson one of the best coaches in the country...I would say one advantage that Johnson had at Navy was he had access to any and all Military personel who wanted any type of shot playing college football...while I understand many of these types of players are undersized, you still see several of Navy's players each year get a shot in the NFL (Reggie Campbell, Kyle Eckel to name a few), giving Johnson a distinct advantage in recruiting...also, I don't know the last time you actually saw the facilities at Navy, but they are pretty good...they don't have trash flying around on the field in the middle of the game like Hawaii does, nor do they have non-carpeted hallways in their office...Johnson also made significantly more than Jones and had a bigger recruiting budget...
what does Bob Wagner having one winning season have anything to do in comparison with June Jones?...your analysis baffles me...we are talking about a guy who has played college football, professional football, has been an head NFL coach and has had a track record of almost a decade of coaching winning teams in NCAA Division One football and you are talking to me about this Wagner guy?...c'mon, come to the table with more than this garbage...if you have a hard on for Jones, just say it...I only have one interest in mind, putting my money on teams who are coached extremely well, and every time I do that with a June Jones coached team I know I'm going to get a good effort from his club and he will put them in situations to succeed...
Greg Schiano didn't have instant success at Rutgers as Jones did at Hawaii...trust me, 'cause I used to take his team as huge dogs when they first entered the Big East and were terrible...were you also aware that the Big East almost kicked them out of the league about four years ago with Temple for being so terrible?...don't get me wrong, I like Schiano as a coach and he's done a good job, but do you know how many great athletes are in the New Jersey area alone to recruit? why do you think he turned down the Miami, FL job? Cause he knows all he has to do is built a fence around New Jersey and he will have a winning team every year...Rutgers also gets revenue sharing from the Big East and all of the money they generate through Bowl games, allowing him to have a huge recruiting budget in comparrison to what Jones had...again, not an accurate comparison to what Jones has done...
Randy Edsall is another one of my favorite coaches and has been to a total of two bowls thus far, which isn't bad, but they have yet to make it to a BCS game, in fact even getting to a game somewhere close to New Year's Day...have you seen the UConn facilities?...they have some of the best in the country with their indoor workout facility, weight room, coaches offices, etc. this all helps with recruiting!...not to mention they also play in the Big East and have a much bigger budget...close, but no cigar...
Schnellenberger has done well, at Miami, Oklahoma and Louisville, but these were programs that were already off the ground when he came in...your mention of what he has accomplished at FAU is worthy of consideration as they were a terrible program when he took over...they have been to a total of one bowl game thus far though and he has the luxury of recruiting a bunch of athletes from Florida! so what if FSU, Miami, Florida and USF get the high profile athletes from the state, there are still plenty of good athletes within the state to field a good team...try going out to Hawaii and recruiting the same caliber athlete and barely have the money to fly off the island when you want someone from the states... not nearly as easy...
you have yet to mention someone who has done more with less than Jones did at Hawaii...and it's you that needs the history lesson with your Dan Hawkins comment...did you even know that Dirk Koetter coached at Boise, or Houston Nutt for that matter?...apparently not, but just remember Boise St. was going to Bowl games and having winning seasons long before Hawkins took over...but you probably already knew that right?...yeah, I bet...
if you are going to come into my thread and pop off, you better have your facts straight...otherwise, you will get chewed up and spit out...do what rookies do and respect the veterans around here...
at least you are right about one thing, June Jones IS a coaching legend!...Comment -

#63Originally posted by MartinBlankPags,
You sure are a sensitive soul. "Come into your thread and pop off"?
If you take this stuff THAT seriously, try decaf.
Who gets this worked up because they are challenged on calling June Jones a "Top 5 College Coach"? Setting aside the fact that the comment itself is dumb, your reasoning is even sillier. UConn has good facilities? Are you serious? Yeah, I don't think Edsall is seeing Rentschler Field as the next big thing. Last time I checked, few if any football games are played on a really nice indoor track (my favorite pags-ism so far)...but hey, you are the legend here, maybe you do know of a game or two played there.
And you think Wagner had ONE winning record at Hawaii in the early 90's? Is that what you actually think happened?
Your comments about Schnellenberger show your ignorance. Schnellenberger took over a Miami program that their trustees voted to shut down, and three years later won a National Championship. The UM program was dead until Howard took it over and won a NC.
Schnellenberger didn't just take over an FAU program, he CREATED one. There was no program there. They may suck now....but the man will be credited for creating a program from scratch. That is securing the money, the support, and watching it grow.
Tell me again, what program has Jones created?
And do me a favor, spare me the bravado of being a "veteran". Simply because you posted here 10K times doesn't really mean much in the bigger picture. I will offer you the same respect you showed me when you got all worked up because I challenged you.
This stuff isn't life or death but I don't think you got that memo. If you read my original response to your post, I posted that I was enjoying the discussion, and then you went off the deep end of the pool.Comment -
