    Auburn's Cam Newton Heisman Chances
    One man's opinion...................

Auburn fans may worry that the allegations of a sports agent shopping Cam Newton's services could cost the Tigers quarterback the Heisman Trophy. Here's guessing it won't. Newton has so much support already that it would take a significant number of voters leaving Newton off their ballots. The Heisman Trophy Trust will give ballots to 927 voters, and each one will put three players on their ballot in order. A first place vote will earn three points, second place is two points and third place is one. Whomever gets the most points will receive the trophy, which will be awarded December 11. What will weigh much more heavily in the Heisman race will be Newton's performance against Georgia on Saturday, against Alabama on November 26 and in a possible SEC Championship Game appearance December 4. Last year, Texas quarterback Colt McCoy might've lost the Heisman with a poor performance in the Big 12 Championship Game, and eventual winner Mark Ingram needed a big performance in the SEC Championship Game to make up for lackluster play against Auburn. For now, the Heisman still is Newton's to lose.

One of the things Newton has going for him is that the 2 other contenders, LeMichael James and Andrew Luck, are from the same conference and will probably split the west coast vote. The other Heisman contenders from the SEC, Mark Ingram and Ryan Mallett didn't perform very well.

    Cam Newton
    LeMichael James
    Andrew Luck

Good point about the Pac-10 guys splitting the vote.

Mark Ingram is out of this race and Mallett would really have to pick it up bigtime.

      Thanks agharah.

I don't think the voters can (should) speculate on whether he is eligible or not when they vote. If there was more smoke to where they knew he was going to be busted then that may be a different story.

The voters should place their vote on the best player, period.

IMO, it is Newton's to lose.

With that being said, the Heisman is a sham... Nothing more than a popularity contest

if Newton pulls Auburn through at Bama and the SEC championship with wins he deserves it, think back to how people viewed this Auburn team coming into the season

Newton has been selected as one of 16 semifinalists for the 74th Maxwell Award for the College Player of the Year. He leads all Football Bowl Subdivision players this season with 35 touchdowns responsible for. He is also 110 passing yards away from becoming the first player in SEC history to pass for 2000 yards and rush for 1000 yards in a single season. He currently ranks 10th in the nation in rushing with 1146 yards and is second in the nation with 15 rushing touchdowns.

A little shocked that nobody is bringing up the allegations that he cheated 3 times @ Florida and was going to be kicked out before he transferred to Blinn CC...

Obviously it is shocking in itself that sealed student record information has made its way to the press but no matter how the info got there is speaks volumes to the kids character...He was already busted for buying a laptop that he allegedly knew was stolen and then throwing it out his dorm window when the police were crashing the dorm... Then came the story about a third party asking for 200k during his recruitment from Blinn CC.... If it is confirmed (not sure how it can be though) that he did cheat @ UF then it certainly does not paint him in a good light.... It would not shock me if voters are very cautious...just recall Peter Warrick and then later all the Reggie Bush backlash...

As a side note... as a former player @ a high profile football factory JUCO... I can tell you that cheating is downright rampant... the players get all the questions for the tests from the Profs in many cases 2-3 nights before the test and are merely asked to look the answers up (some wont call that cheating but it sure isn't college level learning)...most of the guys never even bothered and tried to get smarter guys like me to give them the answers so they did not have to waste their time looking them up...

Heisman - is about One year and being the best college football player That Year.
I say if You can't vote for Newton - for the one reason you dont want your vote to not count 2 years from now .
Then You should nt vote for anyone ..

Right now -there is nothing concrete about his reputation

However as the Heisman also is supposed to represent integrity... having a spotty reputation at best could hurt him... I am just speaking from a pure gambling point of view regarding futures wagers of Newton wining the award...

do you know how un ethical it would be to release school records .
this Is the privacy act - no way in hell - plus it has nothing to do with anything - he admitted wrong doing - He went to Juco .
I m still not sure what 2 years ago has to do with anything this year .

As I said above... it is shocking that student records got released to the media.. I am all with you there... I am also agreeing that he left the school and went to JuCo

However.... With the cheating and purchase of known stolen items he does not paint his character in a positive light...voters are fickle and they may shy away from him if stories like this continue to surround him... voters are not always rational..

If this guy committed murder before coming to Auburn, would their fans still say "" he plays good for us and hasn't murdered here so we don't care if he's done illegal things it's no bother to us". Man, he could be accused of murder, but as long as it didn't happen when he's at Auburn. They apparently don't care.

I live in Jacksonville, they just said on the radio that Urban Meyer denies making the info public and wont comment further.

I think this fire is burning hot and when stories start coming out more people had to these stories and we find out a lot of bad things. Remember Tiger Woods, got in an accident, then was banging girl 1, then here comes 2, then 20 more reports, now divorce, major settlement yada yada yada.

I wouldnt vote at all If I felt like I needed more information

I also wonder why Cam Newtons father said it was nobodys business where the money to fix his crappy church came from.

Maybe its not my business but the NCAA will make sure they account for every nickel.

Coach Jiz is probably freaking out. His fans hated him now they love him and they will certainly turn again if it is found that Newton should not be eligible.

Sounds like the perfect storm for a big UGA upset this week.

Probably not. The problem that will face Heisman voters is the Bush thing. That has to be very fresh in their minds. Do they want to risk going through another Bush fiasco in a year or two? You KNOW that Newton is going to bail out of Auburn after this season ends. He is going to run like hell to the NFL. He is hoping that all of this goes away when he leaves school. It will not.
