    From MMA Weekly

(Reporting by Erik Fontanez and Damon Martin)

Antonio McKee and Jacob Volkmann at UFC 125
A proposed fight between Shinya Aoki and Willamy Freire appears to be off for Dream’s “Fight for Japan” event on May 29. The Dream lightweight champion will remain on the card, but in an interesting twist to the situation, it is unclear whom he will face.
MMAWeekly.com initially reported that a fight between he and former MFC lightweight champion Antonio McKee was on tap, as long as McKee could finalize his travel details. While that fight is very much still in play, our sources indicate that Dream is also negotiating with former WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner.
Sources close to the situation told MMAWeekly.com that the fight between Aoki and McKee had been verbally agreed to, at least from McKee’s side, and that a bout agreement had been issued. McKee, though, must first renew his passport and get a **** to gain entry into Japan, the same sort of issues that reportedly kept Freire out of the fight.

    Jamie Varner at WEC 46
But now multiple sources say that Varner is also in the running with a bout agreement on the table.
There are hiccups for either fighter getting the shot at Aoki, and the final details have obviously not been ironed out. McKee has to make sure his travel documents can be cleared up in time, and Varner had been scheduled to fight in Chicago at next week’s XFO event. Neither is an insurmountable hurdle.
The decision will likely come down to which route Dream wants to take. “Fight for Japan” is a relief effort following the recent tsunami and earthquake disasters in Japan. Couple that with the fact that the mixed martial arts industry as a whole has been struggling in Japan, and Dream is likely going to factor not only who can reliably make it to the fight, but also the costs involved.

I watched it once guys that still roll at antonios bodyshop gym told me ufc first fight nerves... but Antonio is always better in the gym he beats everybody including ufc vets who pass through. I think volkmann was a bad 1st ufc matchup a 3x All american/ big 10 wrestling champ D-1 wrestler with imo better striking just a bad matchup. He eats BJJ black belts alive though elite bjj black belts like marcus aurelio and delson heleno are bad asses on the ground he did well with them. Antonio's Top game feels like hes 500 lbs thats why javier vasquez went to antonios before his chad mendes fight antonio is damn near impossible to submit.

wtf why? You seem like you pick your fights on name recognition alone. Mckee has amazing wrestling and better striking than Aoki. It's also very unlikely that Aoki will submit him. This is the kind of matchip where the line will be way off. Fingers cross it happens.

Varner hasn't signed anything yet, so it's not official.

Varner's preferred method of losing fights is via submission.

Wont help that Varner has been back at college and is currently doing his finals. His main weakness has always been his mental state though, perhaps he wont have as much pressure in this fight. Would love props to be available for this one, Aoki by sub hedged with Varner by decision.

                                            by Mike Whitman (mwhitman@sherdog.com)

It appears Shinya Aoki is one step closer to having a definitive opponent for Dream 17 “Fight for Japan,” as sources tell Sherdog.com that Antonio McKee has signed a contract to face the lightweight ace at the end of May.
Aoki was originally rumored to face UFC veteran Willamy Freire at the event, but **** issues reportedly ruled out the Brazilian as a potential foe. Then McKee was thrown into the mix, but it appeared that the same issues that plagued Freire would also prevent the former MFC champion from competing against Aoki.

As Sherdog.com previously reported, one-time WEC champ Jamie Varner was then brought up and looked to be the most likely candidate to face the Japanese submission specialist, but a source close to the fighter told Sherdog.com that the fight is now off.

Sherdog.com then spoke with a source close to McKee, who asserted that the IFL veteran had signed a contract Thursday to fight Aoki on May 29 at Saitama Super Arena Hall near Tokyo.

Though a source shared that the fighter has signed on the dotted line, he is still in the middle of acquiring a **** that will allow him to fight in Japan.

Dream 17 “Fight for Japan” will feature the opening round of the promotion's eight-man bantamweight grand prix, as well as a pair of quality featherweight contests, as Caol Uno meets Akiyo Nishiura and Mitsuhiro Ishida squares off with Joachim Hansen.

Thats what they said about Marcus aurelio and Delson Heleno. No secret here in LA a ton of BJJ blackbelts refuse to fight him. Thats why im surprised antonio was offered this fight he understands how to take away BJJ guys hips and keep their shoulders on the mat. I assure you Antonio is the stronger fighter hes worked for about 15 years on his anti jiu jitsu shit is crazy. Those that have rolled with him know hes no Joke impossible to submit check his resume....but Aoki is Tricky Flying armbars, flying everything will pull guard gogos and Hes alot ... alot stronger than he looks when he grabs somebody JZ is pretty damn strong at least when i used to spar with him Aoki is stronger than he looks need to make sure Antonio is ready for all this.... BJJ style much different than Delson/maximus all 3 world class BJJ just different with Aoki This is a fight maybe Antonio thinks about keeping standing he has better standup than Aoki but who doesnt. Once this is set in stone i'll stop in the body shop and help him for this

This is a Great Matchup for Tone have no other way to put it he says if the fight stays standing only thing is he cant just lay on aoki and stall him out hes going to have to do some damage stay active safe aware of danger but active because of the different judge scoring in Japan. He needs to understand they score failed sub attempts etc...

Here you can watch Clementi's last fight vs. Reza Madadi and a few other fights from Superior Challenge 7 (4/30/2011).

Could Clementi pull off the upset vs. Aoki?
