CHAEL SONNEN TESTS POSITIVE FOR PED's!

According to California State Athletic Commission Executive Director George Dodd, Chael Sonnen has been notified that he failed post-fight drug screening following his loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 117, which was held Aug. 7 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif.

“[Sonnen] received his notice yesterday,” Dodd told Sherdog.com shortly after the Shane Mosley-Sergio Mora boxing match ended Saturday night in Los Angeles.

In a conversation the day before, Dodd declined to comment on the situation, other than answering that all fighters from UFC 117 had passed their drugs-of-abuse scans, but that the commission was still waiting on performance enhancing drug screens from the event.

Dodd did not state which banned substance was red-flagged, but with a clean drugs-of-abuse scan it is clear the positive test was for a performance-enhancing substance.

The last major UFC banned-substance case in the state centered on UFC 73’s lightweight title match, which saw both competitors -- Sean Sherk and Hermes Franca -- test positive for PEDs. Both fighters were suspended for one year and fined, though Sherk appealed and had his suspension shortened to six months.

Sonnen is staring at a long layoff if he elects not to appeal or is denied. He was scheduled to rematch Silva Feb. 6 in Las Vegas, but that fight may be delayed or scrapped in light of these allegations.

Text messages to Sonnen went unreturned.

His manager Matt Lindland told Sherdog.com that he was cornering a fighter on the East Coast and had no knowledge of the positive test results.

Silva’s manager Ed Soares, who engaged in some heated exchanges via the media in the build up to the fight, was stunned when asked for his reaction.

“If it’s true, I feel really bad for him,” said Soares. “I know he did it to himself but it is really sad, he put on such a great performance that night it is just a shame it will be tarnished.”

i knew he lacked integrity, because when he tapped to anderson, and then he claimed he didn't tap, if we didn't have videotape he would've tried to continue the fight

More people than we will ever know are on something. He was just dumb enough to get caught.

If you look at the schedule they are gonna need Silva to main event either UFC 125 (Jan 1st) or UFC 126 (Jan ??). With Okami/Belfort taking place on November 13th, likely not enoght time to get readu for Silva. Marquardt may get the call now with his win over Palhares

Professor Cooper - There are natural steroids. Testosterone is a natural steroid and obviously men have more of that than women do. It’s illegal to take testosterone because it’s not part of your normal diet. You can’t get a diet equivalent to fail a drugs test. It’s difficult to take a steroid in any normal diet to have an effect because they don’t work orally. You have to inject them, then it’s obvious you’re doing the cheating.

Where it’s a more grey area is in some of the metabolites the body makes from these artificial compounds which are also illegal because the agencies say that means you’ve taken the metabolites. There’s a concern that if you exercise very hard on certain diets you might make small amounts of these metabolites naturally. Then it’s a question of what level the drug company sets those out. It’s difficult to take the natural compound to fail a drugs test. The bodies make it that way. They don’t want to fail people for that.

NEW NEWS (coming for numerous sources).... natural "steroids" can and will be found in over the counter products INCLUDING common cold and flu drugs... this sparks something, remember leading up to the fight all week sonnen reportedly had a stomach bug....this is going to get messy....

whats weird is that most the ufc dug suspensions happen in California, there hardly ever positives in vegas.... is it simply because they have better testing? more testing?

or the UFC has too big an influence over the Las Vegas State Commision, nad they don't report many failed drug tests

“I know he did it to himself but it is really sad, he put on such a great performance that night it is just a shame it will be tarnished.” Jeff Sherwood contributed to this report
