Mir vs cro-cop could be off...

Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic suffers eye injury during training
    by zombie_hobbes on Sep 17, 2010 2:22 PM EDT 0 comments

Local internet site index.hr published a short piece in which a source close to Filipovic's camp claims that:

"MIRKO Filipovic has suffered a serious eye injury during today's practice. The nature of the injury is such that his upcoming fight against Frank Mir scheduled for 25. September is in question."

While there is still nothing official, the possible Crocop's withdrawal from the bout would cause another batch of grief for the UFC. They already struggled to arrange/promote second main event for UFC 119, doing it for the third time and with event week away would be a really difficult task to say the least.

On a more subjective note: We are all (painfully) aware that Mirko's days as a contender are long gone, he is doing this for a massive payday, period. With that in mind I doubt he is very willing to let this opportunity pass and the fight being only a week from today I believe that if he has any second thoughts the UFC can make the offer even more lucrative. (of course all this provided that he can pass the medical)

That said... come next saturday I'll be trembling in front of my TV too afraid to hope that we get to see fearsome Crocop of the glory days enter the octagon one last time and send Mir to the la la land.

That would make things tough on the UFC. Hard to promote Little Nog vs. Ryan Bader as the main event.

Might not necessarily be completely fake...he may still have a cut or something which could be problematic going into the fight.

Cro-Cop has admitted that he would have preferred more time to prepare, and maybe it's just me but in general he hasn't sounded as upbeat or confident as he was going into previous fights. Initially I liked Cro-Cop as the dog in this one, but now it's a no play for me.

Yea the injury could still be true, UFC can't aford to lose this fight off the card soo late. This card is weak to begin with. Can't have Bader Vs little Nog as a PPV headliner.

Leaning even more heavily toward Mir now. I'd have to think he is hurt, but will fight anyway.

I am not even going to buy this ppv, I will watch it online. I can't believe this card even cost money, the only fights I want to see are the 2 prelims on spike. CB and Mitrione.

imo he has not seemed confident in many years, since Gonzaga knocked his block off. I think Mir is the play at this number. Even last time out, if Barry didnt break hand and foot, I think that beating continues through 3 rounds.

what is there to look forward to in a CB fight? unless you're betting on him to get strangled, then I agree.

main event is trash, they should have found a better opponent for mir

I'm looking forward to the lil nog fight, hopefully he derails another hype train.

I dont think Crocop would be pull out of the fight. Dana White will probably force CroCop to fight even if hes injured its too much of a loss for UFC. They've already done promotional videos, countdown, first card to Indianapolis would be ruined etc... list goes on.

Mir's MILF wife has been twittering!.... "They told Frank yes he was injured but he will not be pulling out of the fight". Looks like Cro-Cop does indeed have an injury but is fighting anyway. Mir's odds went from 4/9 to 4/11 last night on PaddyPower. Glad I got him in a couple of parlays before the change.

this main event would be a decent co-main event or ppv opener...... im 100% getting this card but with expectations of being upset.... im a HUGE cop fan so please bet up mir so that i can place a bet on him for nostalgic sakes..... my fanboy prediction is cro cop by cemetarty left head kick.....

the one plus is the bar i go to is probably not going to be filled with the tapout wearing, juiced up monkeys that show up when brock "hes the fuckin best BRING THA PAIN!!!!!" or another main stream big name is fighting

Gotta like Mir in this one now. I can't see CroCop's shaken confidence doing him any favors going in to a fight with an injury. He will be beat before he steps in. However, waiting on the lines for TKO, Sub etc. If there's a good line for CroCop by TKO, I would consider straddling it with Mir to win or by sub. Definitely like Mir straight up here though.

Mirko ‘CroCop’ Filipovic confirmed to Fighters Only today that he has suffered an eye injury and that a doctor has advised him to pull out of his fight with Frank Mir at UFC 119 next week. But CroCop says he has no intention of pulling out and he will be boarding a flight to Indiana tomorrow as planned.

“It was the very last minute of the very last round of the very last sparring,” CroCop told Fighters Only staff writer John Joe O’Regan today. “We were sparring in UFC gloves and my sparring partner - who is about 120 kilos, Croatia’s best thai boxer - he poked me in the eye. The pain was like… I cant even describe it, the pain was so big I thought he had blinded me.

“Luckily there was a TV crew in the room and also some reporters from two websites. Frank Mir has talked this and that, maybe if nobody had seen this and there was no video, he would again be saying I am trying to make excuses. But no excuses, it is just bad luck. All I need now is for my plane to be hit by lightning tomorrow and crash into the Atlantic.

“I went to see a doctor and he advised that the eye should be rested minimum two weeks. But I have made a commitment to the UFC and a commitment to the fans, so there is no question of backing out of the fight. I do not want to let anyone down, I know they could not find a replacement for me at this short notice and many fans have already bought tickets for the show.”

CroCop is currently having to wear an eye-gauze and has a saline solution to use on the injured eye, which requires further examination but appears to have suffered a severe abrasion to the cornea. CroCop says his vision is “almost normal” from the eye and “I hope it could be back to normal in a week”.

UFC 119 takes place on September 25th, with CroCop and Mir headlining. The card also features Rogerio Nogueira, Sean Sherk and former K-1 WGP champion and PRIDE FC veteran Mark Hunt in his UFC debut.

                                              John Joe O’Regan

From looking at bestfightodds.com it doesnt seem that the Mir lines have changed since the news of Cro-Cop's eye issue, yet Paddypower and bet365 have put Mir up to -300 and Cro-Cop +200.

Yeah I was surprised to see the line still at -220 even with the injury news, so either no one has actual photos of the injury yet or they don't see it making a difference, which would be odd.

Either way, I like Mir in this one. His chin IS suspect but I don't know that he'll stand in the pocket and exchange with Cro Cop and hopefully he has the common sense to just use good footwork and avoid those kicks.

Either way, I like Mir in this one. His chin IS suspect but I don't know that he'll stand in the pocket and exchange with Cro Cop and hopefully he has the common sense to just use good footwork and avoid those kicks.
Mir has mentioned in a couple of interviews that he's been working on his wrestling so hopefully that is a hint that he wont stand for too long with Cro-Cop and will look to take it to the ground and lock on a kimura or something (even though I dont think Cro-Cop has much of an advantage standing either).

Hey sportsbook and bodog just took down their line for the fight, but the rest of oddsmaker still have them up so whats going on here? Im pretty sure crocop will be able to fight and after this injury detail came out mir lines even shot up more.

And overall I really think this card is solid, granted I have a bias because I like Sherk and want to see him return, but Melvin always puts on a good fight, and the Lil' Nog/Bader fight should be good as well. Plus Serra vs Lytle? What's not to like?

Hathaway vs Pyle is going to be very good as well, Pyle always puts on great fights and it wont be as one sided as the odds imply IMO.
