BOOKMAKERS are licking their wounds today after punters pulled off a nationwide plunge on Danny Green to knock out Paul Briggs in the first round in their world title fight in Perth last night.
Bookies lost more than $1 million after Green was backed from $10 into his closing quote of $1.55 to KO Briggs in Round 1, which he did in just 29 seconds including the count.
"We were flooded with calls from punters wanting to back Green all day yesterday," said Haydn Lane of Sportsbet.com.au.
"And there more we wound his price in, the more punters wanted to have on."
The IBO cruiserweight fight was a farce, with Briggs going to the canvas after a punch which barely touched him.
Briggs stumbled a few steps, dropped to the canvas and was counted out after copping a mere graze to the head from a weak Green left jab that would have hardly fazed a member of the public.
Green was left fuming at Tuesday's weigh-in when Briggs tipped the scales at 87.2kg, more than 3kg above the agreed 84kg limit.
But the West Australian was even angrier after the inept showing from Briggs, who was returning to the ring for the first time since 2007.
Briggs was booed as he left the arena as irate fans, who paid a minimum of $59 to attend the fight, showered the Queenslander with beer while chanting "bull-shit".
"Paul Briggs ain't getting paid a cent," an irate Green said.
"I don't blame each and every one of you guys in here for being filthy.
"I want to go to the change room right now and give him the flogging he deserves.
"I'm f..ing spewing and I can't say sorry enough for you guys.
"I will make it up to you guys.
"Thank you very much for coming out and supporting me.
"He ain't getting paid guys, I'm very sorry. I can't do anything more.
"I just can't say sorry enough. I don't know, I'm just flipping out right here."
