UFC to Counter Strikeforce on April 17th
I love it....the more MMA the better!!!

"Dana White confirmed today that UFC is running a show on April 17th, head-to-head with the announced Strikeforce show on CBS. The event would air most likely on Spike TV. The Wanderlei Silva vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama match is not the main event. The only thing confirmed is they are trying to finalize a Matt Serra vs. Mike Swick [co-main] semifinal fight today.

There had been talk of a possibility that if UFC scheduled a show on that date, CBS may move the Strikeforce show to April 24th, which would go head-to-head with the WEC PPV in Sacramento.

Even though the April 17th show was not announced yesterday, the issue of the Observer that came out yesterday has a lead story analyzing the whys of this head-to-head battle"

If I had to guess what will be on this card I will go with James Toney. Either that or Kimbo vs Mitrione gets moved to this. I have to imagine they will use one of these 2 to steal ratings.

It is UFC's way of trying to steal viewers from their competition (like they did during all Affliction PPV events)...

strikeforce will switch dates, I believe they have done this before when UFC tried to counter with programming of their own... Strikeforce shouldn't worry about going up against a WEC ppv...

I ****ing hate live counter programing from the ufc.I remember when the ufc countered the first affliction show, I ended up flipping back and forth between the two shows and didnt get to enjoy either of them as much as I would have on there own.

UFC has what seems like such an insurmountable lead over the other companies at this point you would think that they would be happy to see the sport get built up further rather then try to crush every other promotion. The more MMA fans in general, the better it is for them.

What's Dana White's obsession with always trying to beat other organizations in ratings? If he stood back for a moment, he'd realize there is nothing for him to worry about any time soon. They all defer to the UFC/Zuffa as the top company. Let the small fries have their date.

they should counter WEC, they put this free StrikeForce card up against a WEC on PPV it will kill the PPV numbers, Aldo/Faber and other on the card are great fighter but i don't think they will draw big PPV numbers

Agreed. hopefully the WEC will do poor numbers and they will scrap the PPV idea in the future. My cable bill is excessive.

you have to understand dana white is a business man first and mma fan second. the less competition ufc has, the more legitimized his organization looks as the "place to be"
nfl and nba once had competition to their respective leagues and had to crush them to become what they are now
look at boxing, there's so many promotions and leagues its turned into a giant cluster **** with 4-5 champs in every weight class.
