I come before you with I hope a very easy question. I am banging around some MMA data. I was unable to find a concise definition.

    I'm looking here: http://ufcstats.com/fight-details/8aa16cc1ba99aac1

My understanding is that "CTRL" refers to time on the ground where the fighter was in the top position. However, looking through the data, there is a significant number of fights, ~20%, where a fighter has a positive value for CTRL without a knock down, take down or reversal.

Is my definition correct? if so, how does CTRL come to be without one of those events.

What would trigger a control in the clench? So if fighter 1 is locked up and attempting to do a takedown, it would generate control seconds?
