Riots UFC 99 Picks -THE COMEBACK
Before we begin ..... i would like to say that UFC 98 was not so hot for me. Iv realized my mistakes and im going to work toward correcting them. Starting with not looking at the pricelines before i make my picks. I see an underdog with a decent shot at winning and i start convincing myself that he will win ... that will not happen this time. I may edit and add the prices later , but for now ... here are the picks.

    Ricky Story Vs. John Hathaway
To be honest, i do not know much about either fighter other then what iv looked up online. Im fully convinced that your only as good as your last 3 years. These guys have only been in MMA for 3 years and they have some crazy records, 7-1 and 10-0 respectivly. Each have fought jobbers with sub .500 records. Hathaway has a purple belt in juijitzu, but is much more dangerous in the ground and pound. Hathaway has alot of TKO's on his resume and Story seems to go the distance quite abit. These are 2 guys who are nto familiar with losing (except when Story went 0-17 as a wrestler his freshman year in college). All in All, the UFC is trying to reach out globally, and get audiences from every country, especially England. I think the matchmakers who know more about these guys then i do are setting up Hathaway for success in an intreset to draw a bigger UK crowd. I like the pick, but i dont love it.

Riots Pick: Hathaway 1st Round TKO

    Denis Stojnic Vs. Stefan Struve
First off , loser leaves the UFC match ... i barely knew they were here to begin with. The obvious difference is thats almost 7 foot tall, which wont be a problem for Stojnic who is almost 6 foot tall, because he trains with the almost 7 foot kickboxer/UFC vet Semmy Schilt. I think this fight will find its way to the ground and Struve will keep attempting submissions but Stojnic is a survivor, he will use Struves long limbs against him, keep him pinned and work out a lay and pray.

    Riots Pick: Stojnic Unanimous Decision

    Paul Kelly Vs. Rolando Delgado

How do you bet against someone who got their blackbelt in BJJ in a week ?? (according to what he told Frank Mir while on TUF when Mir was wondering how in the world he was a BJJ blackbelt). Paul Kelly is one of the best and most underrated british fighters in the UFC. His only loss was that crazy fight against Marcus Davis. Paul Kelly has not been the finisher that he was before the quaility of his opponents got better, so i think we may have a distance fight in which you will say "Wow, we are probably never going to see Delgado on T.V. again" oh yeah ... and Delgado lost to Junie Browning, thats a def no-go.

Riots Pick: Paul Kelly Unanimous Decision

    Paul Taylor Vs Peter Sobotta

I think this is a tougher one then people think. Taylor has been the step child of the 170lb division, going 2-3 in the UFC. One loss was almost a TKO win over Marcus Davis, the other a rough decision against Chris Lytle. He is however a seasoned vet. I do not know much about Peter Sobotta , but i did check out his highlight tape, and there were some things i liked, like his killer instinct. He was glue on his opponents when going for takedowns, he had alot of dextarity to wrap his legs around his opponent and looks like he would be very dangerous on the ground, however im not sure what his BJJ level is. Hes striking looked very amaturish. He had some power when he connected, but his form was way off on kicks and punches. Also, he seemed to try and punch alot on the ground instead of moving for better positioning. Taylor should get this, but i wanna see Sobotta go to a better school. He has alot of potential.

Riots Pick: Paul Taylor 2nd Round TKO

    Dennis Siver Vs Dale Hartt

I am not to wild about either of these two. Hartt was losing to Corey Hill when "It" happened. He looked suspectable to hills striking, but i think he was able to block most of it because Hills long legs and arms telagraphed it a bit. Siver is ALOT shorter then Hill, i think Hartt will have no answer for his striking. He may have a chance to submit Siver on the ground, but i think Siver will TKO him. Hart has good submissions but his transistions are not that great.

Riots Pick: Dennis Siver 2nd Round TKO

    Justin Buchholz Vs Terry Etim

I made a comment earlier that i would like to take back. I think Buchholz has a good camp, and can eventually become a respected fighter, but right now, Etim has more going for him. He easily wins the striking battle. Buchholz didnt do to horribly bad against Hill, but he did leave alot to be desired. I think he has a bit of wrestling in him, he could get a dominate position on top of Etim, but i dont know if he get finish him. Etim is alot better at surviving on the bottom then he is at escaping it, so we will have to wait to see how that plays out. But i think Buchholz comes out fast and exciting, eats a couple counter punches , tries to get the fight to the ground and gets hurt early, and then loses some steam in fear of getting stopped. I think Etim will know that he has the fight won and if he does not have it stopped after the 2nd, he will coast to victory over the less formidable opponent.

Riots Pick: Etim Via Unanimous Decision

That Does it for the undercard. I have to go now, i will type up my Main Card tomorrow and i can not wait to dig into it. For now, feel free to critizize my picks and let me know what ya think. I think we should start keeping track of who the majority of us pick and see if their is any value when we put our heads together !

Stojnic should dominate. Velasquez couldn't ko him. Struve looked awful against Dos Santos. I think Stojnic just throws a ton of punches and overwhelms Struve again. He shouldn't go to the ground at all because I think most of Struve's wins are submissions. This is probably my pick of the night.

I'm leaning the same way on all the others too.

agree on stojnic, I need to watch a bit more figh footage on struve though, guys has 12 subs in 19 fights, seems dangerous if it hits the ground, unsure as of now but its probably stojnic or a no play

BestFightOdds just posted the first odds on the Kongo Velasquez fight from BetUS

            Cain Velasquez +130
            Cheick Kongo -170

Looks like a good Dog pick here. Don't wanna buy into the Valasquez hype but so far vs the fighters he's fought he's looked good. Kongo is a step up in competition, and kongo has looked better in his last 3 fights (all KO's). Lat fights Cain came in at 6 2" 239 and Kongo 6 4" 232

Cain is an all-american wrestler vs Congo who has been suspect on the ground, also Congo has 3 weeks to prepare for this fight. I think if Congo doesnt get a K.O early, hes going to get taken down and pummeled. I really like Cain to either TKO or win a decision.

My first thoughts are for Cain as well. But I'll stew on it for another week and a half before doing anything drastic.

I am going to pound the line when it comes out. Kongo does not have the cardio, no wrestling and no ground game. Looking at Kongo last 2 loses to HH and Marrero I believe Cain posses all the skill and more these guys have. HH and Marrero controlled him on the ground. Cain is a great wrestler, heavy handed and only 1 fight mode, pressure pressure pressure. I think Cain is going to finish this before it goes to the judges.

                              Riots UFC 99 Maincard Picks

Sorry it would not let me edit my old post, anyways, lets get started. Lets get started with the newest edition !

Mirko Cro Cop Vs. Mostapha Al Turk
First off, i felt so bad when i watched Al Turk get destroyed by Kongo. Then i turned to my buddies and said "See, there is another guy in the UFC i think i can beat". Turk is a decent striker but i dont like the way he leaves his arm out there after some strikes, thats a counterpunches wet dream. Hes ground defense when getting pummelled looked really amaturish to, he flopped around and thru his arms up, like he was mashing buttons in a video game hopping somethign would work. As for Cro Cop , i think he has lost a step, but when we use our 3 year curve, he is still 7-2-1 in the last 3 years with a KO win over the ax murderer, he made Josh Barnett tapout to strikes and he made eddie sanchez look like a sparring dummy, i mean that fight was an instructional video, we all saw him lose to Gonzaga who it turns out is not to bad, he lost a decision to kongo and then should have lost to overeem, but then he TKO'd Hong Man Choi who was a K-1 fighter before beathing Jose Cansacos ass . Well Cro Cop may be on the way out, but he should win this one with out a doubt.

Riots Pick: Cro Cop 1st Round TKO

                              Spencer Fisher Vs. Caol Uno

This fight will probably be bumped to the undercard, but lets take a look. Talk about Underrated , if it wasnt for that controversial decision loss to sam stout (where he had cut 20lbs in two days for the fight) maybe Spencer Fisher would be fighting for a belt right now. He beat Thaigo Alves and TKO'd striker Arron Riley (both happened over 3 years ago, lets look forward) He then beat Sam stout, destroyed Jeremy Stephens and had a submission of the night over Shannon Gugerty (a guy who has won 8 of his 11 wins via submission) He did suffer loses to Frankie Edgar and Hermes Franca, but they are both quaility fighters and Hermes Franca is unorthadoxed enough to catch anybody off guard. As for Uno, he hasnt wona fight outside of Japan since 2002, tho about 3 years ago, he did beat Rich Clementi in a 2 5-minute round fight, and he did beat Ishida, but feel the talent level in the UFC is much greater then What Dream has in Japan.

Riots Pick: Fisher Via Unanimous Decision

                              Marcus Davis Vs. Dan Hardy

First things first, i wanna talk about the mental game, if you guys have not heard, Hardy tried to get people to make really vulgar picks of Davis and post them online , and he said a bunch of duragatory things about him, and how he uses the Irish heritige for promotion only and he was an overrated boxer. As a fighter myself, i think that was idiotic of him, I had a guy go online after my last fight and bash me saying his friend would destroy me on the next card, all that did was keep me in the gym, it made me run those extra 2 miles, and made me focus on making my kicks crisper and kept me hungry all the way till i found out i was deploying early and could not fight. I still think about his comments when im training out here for motivation, so i think Hardy opened up a can worms here, but lets look at their fighting abilities. Dan Hardy is a new comer to the UFC but has been a british fav for years , he has been succesfull in the UFC thus far with wins over IFL Vet Rory Markham and the inconsistant Akihiro Gono. Other then that his record is 21-6 with no real impressive big name wins. He will likely keep this fight standing, he is only a blue belt in BJJ, and hes been reported to be working on his boxing ... to help combat Marcus Davis's overrated boxing. Davis is 13-1 in the past 3 years and 2 months . He beat declining Shonnie Carter and Pete Spratt and upcomers Paul kelley, Paul Taylor and Chris Lyltle , all in slug fest. This is going to be a slugfest that may go to the judges, its tough to make a play on this one tho. I think i may just sit back and enjoy the fireworks

Riots Pick: Marcus Davis via 2nd Round TKO

                              Cheick Kongo Vs. Cain Velasquez

This line is changing faster then americas credit rating, and heres why, Cheick Kongo is 7-2 in thos past 3 years , thos 2 losses were both split decisions. Go Figure those 2 loses were to guys with decent ground control. But he has looked devestating against fellow strikers like Evenson, Al turk and Hardonk, the probablem is, Velasquez is not a 1 dimentional striker, he is a 2 time all american collegiate wrestler and a TKO Machine. Kongo has also had cardio problems in the past and hes going to tire out quick while trying to escape from Velasquez. This fight wont be close unless Kongo lands often and lands early and shows Cain what it feels like to get rocked.

Riots Pick: Velasquez Via 2nd Round TKO

                              Rich Franklin Vs. Wanderlei Silva
If Wanderlei is going to win, he might want to hurry up. The longer this fight goes, the more the fight favors Rich and his conditioning. Wanderlei has an amazing history and is one of the pioneers of MMA because he delivered what deep down inside , most MMA fans want to see , blunt force trauma. But it has been a long time since The Ax Muderer really impressed. Sure he beat Jardine, and lets be honest, who doesnt like to see Jardine get KTFO ?? But he is only 2-4 in the past 3 years , the second win was over a mediocre Fujita in Pride. Rich on the other hand is only 5-3 in the past 3 years, prompting some people to say his time is over and he should retire..... i think thats idiotic. Two of those loses were anderson silva ( when somebody steps up and beats Silva in the UFC , then we can talk) the other was a controversial loss to Henderson. (Henderson won the first round, but come on, Rich was picking him apart the 2nd and 3rd and his cardio was still going long after hendersons was gone) Also Rich has been training with his new BFF Anderson Silva who claims Rich is going to win, Wanderlei , not impressed said "Silva should bet 50,000 dollars on Rich and ill bet 50,000 on myself, and we will see who wins" . I think Anderson Silva knows a good bit about both Rich and Wanderlei , so on this one, im going to Fade Wanderlei FTW !

Riots Pick: Franklin Via Unanimous Decision

Also, i forgot this one ...

                              Mike Swick Vs Ben Saunders

First off ... this should be a good fight. Swick is 6-1 in the past 3 years, that one loss is to the always tough Yushin Okami. He also destroyed Goulet and Riggs. He shows flashes of brilliance but i think his ground game is a little questionable. Yes , i know about the Swickotine, but thats one of the easiest moves to put somebody in. Its usually a result of your opponent living their neck out, not something the you really plan to set them up for. Ben Saunders however is 5-0 in the past 3 years, no losses to his name, although he has never really fought anybody worth bragging about. His take down defense is awesome , even tho i dont think Swick would try and take him down, i feel this is where the fight will go. Saunders is the bigger fighter, he will come in with knees and Swick will go with strikes and at some point i think Saunders will take him to the ground. Saunders has a really overrated ground game , go back and watch his fight with Barrera(who was a god wrestler) he worked him on the ground utilizing rubber guard and just taking advantage of his long flexible limbs to sink his hooks in and to keep a domininate spot. Could end in TKO but i think Swick gets caught while trying to escape.

Riots Pick: Saunders Via 2nd round Submission

There it is guys , i only have 2 upsets ... well really 1 cause i think Valezquez will move to fav. I think the Saunders fight and the Marcus davis fight could be really close, i will probably not lay any money on the davis fight, but i will find the best price on Saunders and hope to cash that in
